Fast & Furious: Univision investigative report coming out

On its program Aquí y Ahora,, Sunday, Sept. 30, at 7 PM Eastern and Pacific, 6 Central (and no idea what time Mountain). It'll be close captioned in English.

From the press release:

"A Univision News investigation reveals how the U.S. government armed Mexican drug cartels. The consequences of the controversial “Fast and Furious” undercover operation put in place by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2009 have been deadlier than what has been made public to date. The exclusive, in-depth investigation by Univision News’ award-winning Investigative Unit – Univision Investiga – has found that the guns that crossed the border as part of Operation Fast and Furious caused dozens of deaths inside Mexico.

Univision’s Investigative Unit identified massacres committed with guns from the ATF operation, including the killing of 16 young people attending a party in a residential area of Ciudad Juárez in January of 2010. This and many other shocking new revelations about Fast and Furious will be presented in a special edition of Univision Network’s newsmagazine “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now) this Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (6 p.m. Central). The Univision News special will be aired with closed captioning in English to expand the reach and impact of this eye-opening investigation.

Univision News’ Investigative Unit was also able to identify additional guns that escaped the control of ATF agents and were used in different types of crimes throughout Mexico. Furthermore, some of these guns –none of which were reported by Congressional investigators–were put in the hands of drug traffickers in Honduras, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. A person familiar with the recent Congressional hearings called Univision’s findings “the holy grail” that Congress had been searching for."

(TN)Victim Uses Samurai Sword To Stop Armed Robber

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - You know the saying: Don't bring a knife to a gunfight? Try telling that to three students who pulled a Samurai sword on a gun-packing robber.

"He chose the wrong guy to mug. I always said I'm not going to give money to someone who mugs me, and I'm living proof. I'm here and he's in jail," said Tyler Michaels, a teenage college student.

The person in jail is armed robbery suspect Deadrick Gaines.

Michaels said Gaines pulled a gun on him in a parking lot and then demanded they go get money from inside his apartment. Once inside, Michaels said he fought back -- successfully wrestling the gun from Gaines, but ending up with two black eyes.

"He put a beating on me. I was just after that gun. I took that beating to get that gun," said Michaels.

He then called his roommates for help and Andrew Perez rushed in and grabbed a decorative samurai sword off the wall and held it to Gaines chest until Murfreesboro police arrived.

Christians and guns

There is a long and thorough article here on what the Christian attitude to guns should be.  The author (a Christian} is rather scathing about the element of pacifism that has crept into the more unthinking churches.

(ssshhhh…silencers)

I recently had the pleasure of touring the Utah facility where Silencerco and SWR sound suppressors for firearms are manufactured. I toured my first arms plant in the late 1960s and many since, and I’ve never seen a manufacturing facility cleaner or more modern than this one. Their approach to their product is just as clean and modern.
They want to make silencers more readily available to law-abiding citizens. I for one have no problem with that at all.
Before Silencerco absorbed SWR, those companies joined two other firms to create the American Silencer Association. Most of the general public, and even many shooters, are unaware that these devices are legal to own in most states, though it involves going through some legal hoops, and a $200 government fee.
ASA maintains a full-time lobbyist to work in several directions. At the state level, to make it legal for law abiding citizens to have silencers in the jurisdictions where it isn’t now. And, to make it legal to hunt with them, which is not the case in many states. At the national level, the association wants you able to buy one without having to pay $200 to the Federal government for approval, and hopefully streamline the whole process.
Suppressors can be life-savers in emergency shootings inside buildings. Police officers and citizens fending off home intruders are at risk for some hearing loss when they fire powerful weapons in close quarters with their ears unprotected. During the fight, loud gunfire can keep you from hearing something that might make the difference between life and death. Hunters firing high powered rifles without ear protection often notice their ears ringing for some time thereafter, a sign of hearing damage. Cleaning out pastures full of prairie dogs ruining good land, or herds of feral hogs doing the same, means lots of gunfire and multiplies that potential for hearing damage. Ear protection can help, but most types get in the way of hearing where the animal is, and all are uncomfortable for all-day wear in the field. Suppressors solve that problem nicely. I’m told ASA’s efforts have resulted in Texas and Arizona approving silencers for hunters.

In other nations – even anti-gun England – the use of silencers for casual hunting, pest eradication, and recreational shooting in the countryside is encouraged. It is considered the gentlemanly thing to do there, so neighbors are not disturbed.
source
The 1934 NFA requiring a $200 tax and jumping through numerous regulatory hoops in order to possess a gun muffler has been one of the worst public health disasters created by the federal government. Millions have suffered hearing loss as a result.
This issue is finally coming to a head. There is no logic or reason that gun mufflers should not be available in the local hardware store for $75, as they are in Finland.
The Supreme court in Finland ruled that it was a constitutional right to be able to construct, sell, or trade silencers.
You know we have a real problem when most European nations have less restrictive gun laws in this area than the United States.

(SC)Sheriff: Cherokee Co. Homicide Most Likely Self Defense

CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. --

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler ruled the death a homicide, but the Sheriff's Office hasn't filed any charges yet. Sheriff Steve Mueller told 7 On Your Side it appears the homeowner was defending himself when he hit a driver multiple times with a cement block.

“Did Mr. Hughes do too much? I don't think so,” said Sheriff Mueller. “I think he done what any reasonable home owner would have done."

Sheriff Mueller says volunteer firemen Josh McAbee was killed at a Glen Hughes’ home on Corinth Road, Saturday morning.

Mueller tells us, McAbee was driving erratically. Somehow his truck ran off the road and hit a trailer in Hughes' yard. Hearing the commotion, Hughes came outside with a gun and fired off warning shots. The sheriff says that's when the two started fighting, and Hughes picked up a cinder block and hit McAbee in the head, killing him.

(OH)Buckeyes for Concealed Carry President Uses Handgun to Defend Family

At approximately 7:00 pm Saturday night, Ohio State Students Joe and Amanda Smith were approached by a threatening white male near Westland Mall requiring Joe, Buckeyes for Concealed Carry on Campus President, to use his concealed handgun to defend himself, his wife Amanda, and their sixteen month old son Kyedin.

The threatening male approached their vehicle while Amanda was buckling Kyedin into his stroller and Joe was near the tailgate. He began making cat calls at Amanda as he closed in on her. Amanda and Joe asked him to leave them alone. Joe placed himself between his wife and the aggressor while a panicked Amanda began to remove Kyedin from the stroller and place him back into the vehicle. The male then became belligerent and began issuing threats to Joe.

"He just kept coming, no matter what I said. Then he told me he had a gun and had no problem killing all of us," said Joe. Joe instructed Amanda to call the police while he engaged the threat. "He kept saying he was going to kill us. He stopped short to answer his phone and told whoever it was where he was and to come help him get this 'white honky.'"

"I demanded he stop, but he didn't. When he was about fifteen feet away, I drew my handgun," Joe explained. "I was prepared to shoot, but didn't have to."

According to Joe, the aggressor stopped, raised his hands, and began apologizing. An older vehicle arrived, presumably with the aggressor's backup. He got into the vehicle and left.

"I was terrified," said Amanda. "I'm glad Joe had his gun. Who knows what would've happened if he didn't."

Deputy Zachary P. Cooper (#933) of the Franklin County Sheriff's office responded to Amanda's 911 call in approximately 7 minutes. Deputy Cooper told Joe "this is exactly why law abiding citizens can carry firearms. I'm a firm believer in it."

Ohio Students for Concealed Carry State Director Michael Newbern points out that "Joe was forced to defend himself with his handgun on a Saturday." Newbern added, "What if this incident occurred on a weekday when Joe and Amanda were going home from campus and he would have been disarmed by Ohio State policy?

"This is why Ohio Students for Concealed Carry and Buckeyes for Concealed Carry is suing Ohio State to bring the student code of conduct in line with Ohio Revised Code," he added.

Students for Concealed Carry is a nationwide non-partisan student organization. The group's sole mission is to restore the right of law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms on all public university campuses. The group works to accomplish this mission by educating the public, university officials, and lawmakers of the facts about campus carry and lobbying to remove the restrictions on campus carry from the laws of the state.

I did not find this incident to be reported in any old media. Surveys show that citizens use firearms to stop crimes and/or defend themselves between 1.5 to 2.5 million times a year. In upward of 95 percent of the time, no shots are fired. Obviously, as in this case, most of these incidents are not reported in the media.

(OK)Disabled Homeowner Shoots and Kills Female Buglar

An Oklahoma gun owner shot and killed an intruder who broke into his home last Thursday. Yeah, yeah, we know – you’ve heard this story and stories just like it a thousand times before. This one’s a little bit different though, because this time the would-be thief was a woman.

The burglar in question was 50-year-old Mary Kathleen Sanders, but she also brought along two accomplices, 26-year-old Misty Dawn Puskaric and 37-year-old Starr Michelle Timmons. According to reports, Sanders had previously worked for the homeowner and therefore knew that he was disabled.

But just because somebody is disabled doesn’t mean that he can’t put up a fight -- especially when he's got a gun in his hand.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the man was awaken by the three suspects as they burglarized his home. At some point between waking up and confronting the would-be robbers, he grabbed his gun. The homeowner shot and killed Sanders just outside of his home, prompting Puskaric and Timmons to flee the scene. The two women were later arrested by authorities and are being charged with first-degree burglary.

It isn’t very often that you hear about a group of women committing a crime against men. It’s kind of surprising considering the fact that they could probably get away with it more easily. Studies have shown that people automatically trust women more than men.

It’s difficult to imagine how social convention might affect a gun owner’s decision to pull (or not pull) the trigger. A popular societal rule is you’re not supposed to hit a girl, so perhaps some think that translates as you’re not supposed to shoot a girl either. Whoever made that rule probably didn’t have home invasions in mind, though.

It makes you wonder: what types of criminals would make you hesitate? You wouldn’t have to think twice about shooting a huge guy with a knife, but what if you walked downstairs at two in the morning to find a woman stealing your stuff? What if the robber is obviously a teenager? Would you still pull the trigger then?

The homeowner in this story was put in a tough situation. When you’re disabled or put at a major physical disadvantage, it’s probably safer to shoot your attacker and ask questions later. Things get a little bit fuzzier if the homeowner has a marked physical advantage over the intruder. In that case it might just be better to hold the criminal at gun point and wait for the authorities.

What do our readers think? Would the age or gender of a burglar affect whether or not you pull the trigger, or is “intruder” the only descriptor that matters when it comes to issues of self-defense?

Clovis NM man found not guilty in shotgun defense

ALBUQUERQUE- David Chipman “Chip” Venie, one of the best criminal defense attorneys in New Mexico, won two more major cases at trial recently: one aggravated DWI and one aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Criminal defense attorney Chip Venie was able to improve his overall trial record to an astounding 49-6 (16-1 in New Mexico).

State v. Holt, D-905-CR-2011- 00640, was an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon case in Clovis, New Mexico at the District Court at 701 N. Main Street, before Judge Ted Hartley. The defendant, R. Holt, was accused of bashing a man’s head in with a shotgun. In State v. Holt, Chip Venie was able to show that all three witnesses in the case, Alvin Stacy, Tim Stacy, and Lee Lupo (owner of Sparkle Cleaners in Clovis, New Mexico), were not telling the entire truth. Criminal defense attorney Chip Venie showed Mr. Holt was the actual victim and acted only in self defense. The case went to jury on August 9, 2012. The jury came back with a not guilty in less than half an hour. Chip Venie was able to obtain a complete exoneration (not guilty) for Mr. Holt. The trial judge was Teddy Hartley and the prosecutor was Wil Greig and Matt Chandler.

Nevada Views: Is gun registration worth cost?

Seven decades ago, Lucky Luciano, Frank Costello, Meyer Lansky and their pals from New York decided that Clark County was ripe for expanding mob operations, and organized crime arrived in Las Vegas - complete with armed "soldiers" for protection and muscle. In response, the county adopted the ordinance requiring the registration of handguns. (The idea probably came from California, where some form of handgun registration has been required since at least the end of World War I.) It was assumed that the mobsters wouldn't comply so, with few legal restrictions on search and seizure back then, the new ordinance provided law enforcement with some serious leverage.

Excerpt, More here

More likely, the idea came from the New York Sullivan law, where handgun registration was instituted by the infamous mobster and legislator, Big Tim Sullivan, who instituted the law to protect his ganster buddies.

Fast and Furious Embodies Corruption at Highest Levels

After government-trafficked guns were found at the murder scene of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in 2010, higher-ups all the way to the White House started scrambling to cover their tracks.

The gun-walking program known as Operation Fast and Furious came to a head two years later on June 20, 2012, when the House voted to hold the United States attorney general in contempt for lying to Congress.

The same day of the House vote, the president himself publicly stepped into the fray. Obama invoked executive privilege in order to prevent long-awaited subpoenaed documents from seeing the light of day. Not surprisingly, the state-run media downplayed Obama's official entrance into the Fast and Furious scandal.

Now, after a 17-month-long investigation, the inspector general for the DOJ is releasing his findings. And another hearing has been scheduled for September 20 (the third time it has been rescheduled), with the IG appearing before Rep. Darrell Issa's House Oversight Committee.

Fox News has already obtained certain sections of IG Michael Horowitz's report. If this partial information is any indication of the rest of the report, it doesn't look like the investigation will be a shining example of transparency.

The IG's conclusion: Fast and Furious began in Phoenix, with most of the blame going to three ATF managers: Phoenix Agent in Charge Bill Newell, Supervisor Dave Voth, and Case Agent Hope MacAllister. Attorneys for all three vehemently defended their clients.

Debra Roth, an attorney for MacAllister, wrote to Inspector General Michael Horowitz that the report "fails to account for the abdication of oversight, guidance and responsibility by ATF headquarters and Main Department of Justice regarding the implementation of what is in essence a strategy to combat an international criminal enterprise.

It looks like Horowitz plans to scapegoat ATF underlings who followed orders from higher-ups at the DOJ. What about DOJ U.S. Attorney in Arizona Dennis Burke, who talked openly about "the river of iron flowing from Phoenix to Mexico"?

The report also cites "a failure in leadership and a lack of accountability and oversight up and down the chain of command." Translation: nothing to see here -- just some negligent ATF agents and their supervisors looking the other way.

"We found no evidence in Operation Fast and Furious that the ATF or the (U.S. attorney's office) attempted at any point during the investigation to balance the risks to the public safety against the long-term benefits of identifying trafficking networks and participants," the draft report says.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (BAFTE) receives its orders from the DOJ. And since the president made the decision to cover for his AG, Americans can safely assume he and Holder are up to their eyeballs in Fast and Furious.

Did Horowitz find a smoking gun leading directly to the White House? Did Obama know about Fast and Furious back in 2009? What about Homeland Security's Janet Napolitano and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?

Maybe the IG will be able to explain Holder's and Obama's "under the radar role" in a plot that killed two federal agents and scores of Mexican citizens. Perhaps one of the representatives will ask Horowitz the exact location of White House National Security staffer Kevin O'Reilly. Is he still in Iraq hiding out?

Can the IG tell us when weapons possibly linked to Fast and Furious will finally stop showing up in Mexico? Recently, a cache of firearms was found there when school authorities discovered a nine-year-old boy with a fully loaded semi-automatic gun stashed in his bookbag. A police SWAT team raided the boy's home, where they located powerful weapons -- some brand-new. The packaging suggested that they came from the United States, according to David Codrea at the Examiner. Sources will neither confirm nor deny whether the guns are tied to Fast and Furious.

Will Issa then ask Horowitz why he felt it necessary to run the report by White House lawyers before making it public? Why not just let the DOJ attorneys go over it? According to Issa, because of DOJ "pushback," Horowitz delayed the hearing a week in an effort to delete sensitive information and to allow any agencies named in his final report to refute his findings.

Congressman Issa told Greta Van Susteren he is "trying to be cautiously optimistic" and taht he hopes the report and hearing get to the bottom of who really authorized the gun-walking program.

After the last four years of this administration's "transparency," odds are Issa and the rest of us are going to be severely disappointed.

The reason the Fast and Furious scandal never gets off the merry-go-round is because the Obama administration is rife with corruption. Agencies like the DOJ that police an independent IG's reports through demands to review it before the final release to the public can mean only one thing: there's nowhere to turn for real justice.

(TN)UPDATED: Truck owner shoots at suspects stealing his truck at Walmart

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- A man left his truck keys on a counter at the Walmart on Brainerd Road Tuesday afternoon, where they were picked up by another man who stole his truck.

The suspect took the keys to the Walmart parking lot, where he used the keyless entry fob to find and open the silver 2010 Ford F-150 truck. The suspect and another female suspect left in the truck.

The truck's owner, a licensed handgun carry permit holder, discovered his vehicle being stolen and fired on the suspects.

Chattanooga Police Department's PIO Nathan Hartwig said, "If you're shooting someone because they are stealing, no, you are not justified in that shooting. But as long as a person can articulate that they were in fear they are going to be seriously hurt or killed or someone else is going to be seriously hurt or killed, then you have the right to shoot at that suspect."

(KY)92-Year-Old Man Fatally Shoots Home Intruder

“I aimed right for his heart,” said Earl Jones, a 92-year-old man from Kentucky, as he described the moment when he delivered a fatal shot to a home intruder.

What could have caused such calculated determination? We should go back to the beginning, but to be fair this is a story that’s 92 years in the making.

Earl Jones has been having trouble with young whippersnappers recently. Not because they drive too fast or because they walk around with their fancy iPod whatchamacallits, but because they’ve been stealing from him. Jones has recently been the victim of three separate incidents of theft. The crooks have taken just about everything they can get their hands on, from guns and money to livestock.

It’s kind of understandable how Jones' property could have become a hotspot for criminal activity. To criminals, old timers probably seem like easy targets. They don’t have the best eyesight, their reflexes can be a little slow, and some of them can’t get out of their chair, let alone put up a fight. But young folks tend to forget: you don’t get a few years away from the big 100 by being a wuss.

Just to refresh your memories, here’s an incomplete list of what 92-year-old Earl Jones of Kentucky has been through in his lifetime:

* The Great Depression

* Serving in World War II

* The Red Scare

* ‘80s Fashion

If we ever decided to get into the world of crime, “people who fought the Nazis” would probably be pretty low on our list of targets. But Lloyd Maxwell, 24, Ryan Dalton, 22, and Donnie Inabnit, 20, were willing to take their chances. They broke into Jones’ home in the fourth and most recent robbery incident, which led to a lethal encounter with a still very dangerous gun owner.

As soon as Maxwell entered the doorway and exposed himself to Jones, the WWII veteran pulled the trigger. The would-be thieves retreated, leaving Jones to call his neighbor, who then called police. When asked why Jones never bothered to call 911, he matter-of-factly answered, "I'm a military man -- I ain't going to dial somebody and have to wait for an hour while the guy shoots me in the face and is gone.”

This might be a good time to mention what Jones did in WWII. He served in the Air Force and worked on planes, including the Enola Gay. Yes, the Enola Gay, the one that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima.

The robbers retreated to their car and drove for about a mile before calling 911. Medical help and authorities showed up to find Lloyd Maxwell dead on arrival. The other two offered a shaky alibi about what caused the wound and were ultimately arrested. Dalton and Inabnit are both being charged with 2nd degree complicity and tampering with physical evidence.

Jones, on the other hand, will not be charged. Kentucky lawyer Bruce McClure explained that Jones was well in his right to pull the trigger. "The statute does not require you to retreat even to the telephone,” McClure said. "His defense is that he had a right to presume that they meant to cause him harm. He's got the presumption in his favor."

This shooting might put a stop to the recent crime spree, but if it doesn’t then this fiery old-timer still isn’t about to throw in the towel. He’s already phoned police to try to get his confiscated weapon back. In the meanwhile, his neighbor has loaned Jones a shotgun and a local pawn shop has offered to give him a replacement rifle.

That just goes to show you: mess with WWII veterans at your own peril.

Did Colorado shooter single out Cinemark theater because it banned guns?

With 12 dead and 58 wounded, the July 20th shooting at the Cinemark Century 16 Theater in Aurora, Colorado was sure to result in a lawsuit. On Friday, the first suit was announced, claiming Cinemark has “primary responsibility.” The theater did have responsibility for the attack, but not for the reasons that the lawyers bringing the case think.

The lawyer bringing the suit, Attorney Marc Bern, with the New York city law firm of Napoli, Bern, Ripka and Scholonik, suggested the theater should have had security guards the night of the attack. Yet, checking bags or metal detectors at the front of the theater that night wouldn’t have prevented the attack. The killer brought his guns in through an emergency backdoor.

Armed security guards at movie theaters are rare in low crime areas, such as Aurora, especially on less crowded weeknights. And, with an audience fleeing the theater, armed guards may have experienced difficulty getting quickly inside.

So why did the killer pick the Cinemark theater? You might think that it was the one closest to the killer’s apartment. Or, that it was the one with the largest audience.

Yet, neither explanation is right. Instead, out of all the movie theaters within 20 minutes of his apartment showing the new Batman movie that night, it was the only one where guns were banned. In Colorado, individuals with permits can carry concealed handgun in most malls, stores, movie theaters, and restaurants. But private businesses can determine whether permit holders can carry guns on their private property.

Microstamping folly: More liberal brainlessness

New York politicians are targeting Remington Arms in their state with microstamping legislation and Connecticut has Colt in its sights.

But both gun makers say microstamping is expensive and unreliable and they will leave their respective states if these laws are passed, resulting in job losses for the Yankee states and job gains for unspecified Western states.

Proponents claim microstamping will allow authorities "to quickly identify the registered guns used in crimes."

Unless, of course, criminals use only revolvers which don't eject spent cartridge cases.

Unless, of course, criminals pick up their spent cartridge cases and carry them away from the crime scene along with their microstamped guns.

Unless, of course, criminals buy their guns outside of New York and Connecticut.

Unless, of course, criminals buy foreign-made guns through the black market once the entire US is required to adopt microstamping.

Unless, of course, glove-wearing criminals use registered microstamped guns stolen from honest citizens and simply leave the guns at the crime scene along with the spent cartridge cases.

Unless, of course, criminals pay their underworld gunsmiths to replace the microstamped firing pins for un-microstamped firing pins.

These are just some of the problems.

New York Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, identified in the article as "a Democrat and the chief sponsor of the microstamping legislation" said of Remington and Colt, "It’s unfair of them to resist sensible regulation to save lives."

But, of course, microstamping won't save a single life because the spent cartridge cases are not "spent" until after they have been fired and the victim is already dead.

(CA) Shotgun-Wielding Mom Saves Two-Year-Old From Kidnapper

Stealing candy from a baby is pretty easy, but stealing a baby from a gun-toting mother is a whole different story. Just this past Tuesday, Brianne Rodriguez was placed in a deadly struggle with the fate of her two-year-old daughter hanging in the balance.

At around 8:40 a.m., a man knocked on Rodriguez’s front door of her home in Fresno County, California, but she wisely decided not to answer. A few moments later Rodriguez heard somebody breaking in through the backdoor and things quickly went from bad to worse when the ski mask-wearing intruder attacked Rodriguez. She said the man threw a chair at her, which she tripped over and fell, and that's when her two-year-old daughter started screaming. The intruder saw the little girl and proceeded to walk towards her.

Rodriguez described the terrifying moment, "I was thinking, 'please God don’t let him take my baby.'" She said she grabbed at the man, but he just threw her back to the ground and began kicking her in the ribs and face.

While she was subdued the man then grabbed the helpless child, put his hand around her mouth, snatched Rodriguez's purse and then attempted to flee to his car. Though battered, Rodriguez said she knew she had to do something. "I’m here now, I need to get her, to protect my baby," Rodriguez recalled. "I kicked into lioness mode, protecting my cub."

She said she stumbled to the front of her house, grabbed an unloaded shotgun that she kept in the closet, and confronted the man in her front yard as he made his dash around the house towards his car. She gave the man a very simple ultimatum: drop the child or die.

If the man had called Rodriguez on her bluff, we probably would have turned on the news earlier this week to an Amber Alert. Luckily, the would-be kidnapper dropped the girl and fled the scene. The story also would have gone a lot differently if Rodriguez had enough time to load the gun before confronting him – the kidnapper probably wouldn't have made it two steps before getting transformed into a spaghetti strainer.

Police are investigating the crime and currently looking for the suspect, who is described as a white or light Hispanic man with dirty blonde hair.

Strict French gun controls at work

Three of the four victims killed at a French Alpine beauty spot were shot in the middle of the head, prosecutors said today.

The family including parents, an older woman and two children were found in a bullet-riddled BMW near Chevaline in France.

The owner of the car was named as Iraqi-born Saad Al-Hilli, 50, who lived in Claygate, Surrey.

Mr Al Hilli is understood to have been the secretary of a Wiltshire-based aerial photography company, AMS 1087, since 2007.

The woman, believed to be the mother of the two girls, was reportedly 50 years old while a 77-year-old Swedish woman was also killed in the car.

They were discovered by a French cyclist named as Sylvain Mollier, a father-of-three in his 40s, who overtook a British cyclist on the approach to the crime scene yesterday afternoon. The second rider, a former serviceman in the RAF, then raised the alarm after finding the bloodbath.

Detectives discovered 15 spent bullet casings around the car, which was locked and the engine running when it was discovered.

France recently tightened its laws on illegal firearms amid a worrying rise in the use of guns by criminals. In July a gunman using an assault rifle shot dead two people and injured five at a nightclub in Lille after being turned away.

In March, Mohammed Merah, who claimed to be linked to al-Qaeda, killed four people at a Jewish school and three soldiers in southern France. He was killed after a 32-hour siege in Toulouse.

(UK)In the clear! No charges against couple who shot burglers who targeted their isolated cottage

The couple arrested for opening fire on intruders who targeted their isolated cottage will not face charges, the Crown Prosecution Service announced last night.

Andy and Tracey Ferrie had been held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after dialling 999 to report that they had discharged a shotgun when a four-man gang broke in to their home in the middle of the night.

The couple spent almost three days and nights in custody until they were released on bail late on Tuesday night.

Yesterday, hours after two men appeared in court charged with burglary in connection with the raid on the Ferries’ 200-year-old cottage, prosecutors said it was ‘clear’ the couple ‘did what they believed was necessary to protect themselves, and their home, from intruders’.

The decision was greeted as a victory for common sense by friends and relatives.

(TX)Reserve officer shot and killed intruder

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Authorities said a 30-year-old Poteet reserve police officer reportedly shot and killed an intruder at his North Side home Tuesday morning.

Police at the scene said Officer Alfredo Isaac Gonzalez was asleep at 3:15 a.m. in the upstairs apartment at the Lincoln Village Apartments in the 1700 block of Jackson-Keller Road when he heard glass shattering in his kitchen.

Gonzalez told police that when he went to investigate, he saw a man trying to break in through a window. San Antonio police spokesman Officer Matthew Porter said Gonzalez identified himself as an officer and ordered the intruder to stop, but the man ignored his commands.

Porter said Gonzalez then fired once through the blinds. The intruder was struck in the head and died on the apartment’s patio, police said. The alleged intruder, believed to be in his early 20s, was wearing black socks on his hands and had tools in his pocket.

Police said the intruder apparently opened a patio storage closet before trying to enter the home. No charges are expected for Gonzalez, who Poteet Police Chief Martin Chavez said had been an unpaid volunteer patrol officer for the department only about a month, working once a week.

Chavez said Gonzalez was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Gonzalez’s peace officer license never has been suspended or revoked because of disciplinary actions, according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Meanwhile, police said two other men were in Gonzalez’s apartment at the time of the shooting. A man who answered the door at the apartment Tuesday afternoon declined an interview request on behalf of the household, including Gonzalez.

Several neighbors at the complex said the incident didn’t make them feel unsafe. Jorge Rodriguez, who lives in Gonzalez’s building, applauded his neighbor for using a gun to protect his home. Rodriguez said he keeps a pistol for self-defense.

(TX)Evil Comes From Man Not the Gun

Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- A redneck friend of mine and a native Texan sent me a picture by e-mail of a Texas road sign.

A green highway one, with the Texas flag on it you would see as you drive into that state. They usually have the expression “Don’t mess with Texas” on the bottom of the sign.

The sign in the picture had four more lines added. “Our citizens have concealed weapons”, “If you kill someone, we kill you back”, “We enjoy gun fights-it’s a Texas tradition” and “We have 120 prisons – enjoy your stay.”

There is a good chance that the signage has been enhanced on someone’s computer. Perhaps Texas does not officially endorse such verbiage. The alter-ego of my red neck Texas friend is a mild mannered, retired Oklahoma grade school teacher. I am sure there is no way she would endorse lawlessness in the guise of revenge or streets of Laredo justice.

Evil however sometimes knows no justice. Sometimes you just have to stop evil before it can harm again. I have been to Columbine high school. I was in Colorado Springs four years ago when evil in the guise of a wannabe missionary (who was removed from training) killed innocent family members walking out of church on a cold December, Sunday morn.

As a Colorado Ranger I made the offer in my column to attend the execution of Major Hasan, assuming he ever goes to trial for the massacre of thirteen soldiers at Ft. Hood, Texas. Now we have the movie theater massacre of twelve innocent people (including three military members) in Aurora, Colorado.

Each a planned, practiced, and very well orchestrated public display of evil.

The recent Colorado shooter was seen at an outdoor firing range practicing with the very rifle, handgun and shotgun he used to dispense evil in the form of murder. There is video footage of the two Columbine high school males / murderers shooting their weapons prior to their deliverance of death and unrecoverable family destruction.

The guns are NOT the only the tools to facilitate the pain and carnage that the deliverers of evil used. It was not guns that the 9-11 hijackers used to kill almost 3000 victims. It was airplanes that were controlled and guided by pure evil that flew into the towers. Colorado citizens have the state sanctioned right to carry a firearm to protect and defend their lives and the lives of their families. The City of Aurora and the movie theater took that right away from the innocent patrons.

There is probably very little chance that a lone theater patron carrying his / her legally authorized handgun was going to rise from their seat and single handedly charge the “machine gun of evil” and kill the destructive shooter. Many of the patrons were however lying on the floor looking up at the shooter from inches away. In that scenario a single armed citizen could have made the difference of how many had to die or be injured that night, but no, Aurora is a gun free city.

By Colorado State statute a business can post their premises for the open (non-concealed carry) carry of a firearm, but they cannot post against concealed carry. Again Aurora is a gun free city, as far as I can see doing so against Colorado State statute.

Wisconsin enacted concealed carry in November of 2011. They made sure in the new statute that if you did not post your business against carrying a firearm on your premises, you would not be held liable if an evil person used his weapon to harm people on your property. However if you choose to post your business and disallow a citizen the ability to carry their firearm to defend themselves and they are harmed because they cannot defend, you the business owner are liable.

I believe this is not the case in Colorado. So the dead and the many wounded could not defend from or repel evil. The current liberal government is laying low on the gun control issue. They know it is a political career stopper and want to side step any semblance of trying to stand in the way of the Second Amendment, at least until they can get their candidate reelected.

The firearm in the hands of evil can and most assuredly will destroy, but it is evil that drives this train. Evil will always be with us and Americans must be able to oppose, defend and stop it whenever they can. Some how the words on the Texas road sign seem less funny and ring more true.

(MI)A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Detroit Police Gun Buy-Back

Detroit, Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- During a Detroit gun buy-back program conducted yesterday at a local church, a group of gun rights activists staged an event of their own – a firearm rescue operation.

On Thursday, August 30th, the Detroit Police Department (DPD) and the St. Cecilia Catholic Church conducted a gun buy-back event which netted a reported 365 firearms. Predictably, the organizers announced that the program was a success and that the city would be safer, as a result of citizens voluntarily disarming themselves. Apparently, these folks do not know that there are at least 21 confirmed serial rapists in Detroit and that there have been at least 240 homicides this year, as of last Sunday.

Detroit Firearm Rescue Operation Detroit Firearm Rescue Operation

This year’s haul of 365 firearm purchases pales in comparison to 737 guns they bought in August of last year. Of course, they’ll tell you that just one junk gun bought from a widow means that one person may not get shot as a result. This conjecture flies in the face of the fact that gun buy-backs have no measurable effect on violent crime. Furthermore, the police are not asking any questions about the guns such as how they were acquired. These events are conducted for the sake of appearances – another “feel good” media story on how hard the police are “trying” to make our city safer.

Imagine the surprise that the gun buy-back organizers must have felt when about 20 gun rights activists arrived to the scene carrying signs which promised to pay more cash than the church.

For the record, the official prices being paid to participants were $10 for pellet guns, $25 for inoperable junk guns, $50 for working firearms, and $100 for so-called “Assault Weapons” – whatever those may be. >P> The “gun rescue” was organized by both Michigan Open Carry, Inc. and followers of the “Legally Armed In Detroit” blog. Participants stayed off the private property of the church, displayed their “Buying Guns – CASH” signs, and rescued about 20 firearms. More firearms could have been saved however much of what was being offered for sale was junk. For example, one lady produced a banged up small form-factor Bryco Arms .22LR caliber semi-automatic handgun without a magazine. She was advised to quickly sell it the police before they ran out of money.

The police working the event, 20 – 30 officers, were professional. No major complaints were aired, however, there was one action performed during the event that did cast a shadow. Five officers were standing in the street forming a blockade between the church and private buyers. Obviously, some firearm sellers were intimidated by the show of force and did not run the risk of exploring a better offer for their unwanted firearm.

The “gun rescue” participants had to adjust tactics; sellers were solicited a little further up the street from the church.

In all, some previously unwanted firearms now have a home that appreciates them and the community at large has been educated about the false promises of gun buy-backs. The counter-buy-back has been covered extensively in the media and more people will now demand that their elected officials do more than waste scant public safety resources to solve our violent crime problem. Hopefully, the police department will not have the gall and audacity to stage more of these worthless events in the future. >P> About The Author Rick Ector is a National Rifle Association credentialed Firearms Trainer, who provides Michigan CCW Class training in Detroit for students at his firearms school – Rick’s Firearm Academy of Detroit.
