3D-printed gun update

The world's first 3D-printed gun, made out of heat-resistant plastic, has been fired in Texas.

Creator Defense Distributed said that the 3D-printed handgun, called the Liberator, was successfully fired in its first test at a firing range south of Austin, Texas.

Fifteen parts of the gun are made from ABS heat-resistant plastic, while the firing pin is metal in order to be picked up by metal detectors and make it legal under US law.

The handgun is capable of firing standard handgun rounds and the blueprints for the weapon are available to download from the internet.

Footage of the test shows 25-year-old university student Cody Wilson firing the gun at a target. The student spent eight months creating the gun.

Mr Wilson told the BBC that his plans to make the design available were "about liberty".

3D-printing works by building up layer upon layer of material to make the product. The 3D-printer used to make the gun was bought on eBay for $8,000

"The Liberator," as the weapon is provocatively titled, is a 16-piece firearm made almost entirely of ABS plastic, with a metal firing pin and an embedded metal shank meant to provide enough metal mass to comply with the 1988 U.S.
