RAYTOWN, MO (KCTV) - A Raytown man says he confronted a man trying to break into his vehicle and fatally shot him when he thought he was pulling a weapon on him, according to police.
Raytown police were called to an area near East 59th Street and Elm Avenue at 5:13 a.m.
Officers found Kyle Smotherman, 31, of Raytown dead inside a pickup, which had struck a fence along the street.
The homeowner lives about two blocks away in the 5900 block of Crescent Avenue. Police say the man reported that he heard sounds from outside his residence where his truck was parked.
"He went outside to investigate, armed with a handgun," according to the news release. "The resident found an unknown man inside his truck, apparently trying to steal it and confronted that man. The resident thought that the man pointed a gun at him. The resident fired his gun at the man."
