‘Constructive conversation’ on guns precluded by ‘progressive’ goals and tactics by David Codrea

David Codrea nails it with this one.  How can you have a "debate" with people who willfully lie, who show that they cannot be trusted to do what they say, and whose only measure of morality is if they win.   You cannot.

“Will we ever be able to have a constructive conversation on the [gun] issue?” Joanna Weiss asked Sunday in her “Gun Debate Hate” column in The Boston Globe. She was referring to reports from the week before about a Swamspcott selectman seeking authority for police to enforce Massachusetts state law requiring gun owners to keep firearms in their homes locked up.
“Here’s a summary of what happened, as far as I can gather, at last week’s meeting of the Swampscott Board of Selectmen,” Weiss wrote, decrying “the Internet Instant Outrage Machine [that] rained down on Barry Greenfield, the selectman who dared to ask a question about the limits of gun laws, in the context of seeking ways to prevent school violence.”

Except Greenfield did more than merely ask a question. And professional columnist Weiss didn’t gather facts from very far, particularly in light of actual details being so readily available.

No constructive dialog is possible with people who omit and misrepresent the facts. No recognition is owed those who casually dismiss fundamental rights and ridicule opposing, well-substantiated viewpoints as “paranoia,” as Weiss did here. No concessions can be given to people whose only interest is to keep gaining and then occupying ground, and once that’s secured to press for more.
