A man with a .44 magnum stopped the attack, but it was too late for the victim.
An anguished mother told a packed courtroom this afternoon how she still has nightmares about her son, Craig Sytsma, being attacked and mauled to death by two large dogs as he jogged along a rural road in Metamora Township a year ago.
"I am trying to help him and I can't get to him," Jacque Sytsma told a Lapeer Circuit Court judge, beginning to cry as the dogs' owners, Valbona Lucaj, 45, and Sebastiano Quagliata, 46, sat handcuffed in jail garb, awaiting sentencing.
Judge Nick Holowka -- calling the fatal mauling "tragic," and "preventable" -- sentenced the couple to a minimum of 57 months to a maximum of 15 years in prison.
