The armed man was an corrections officer. As a group, they are allowed personal weapons in New York City.
The 27-year-old officer, who was off-duty, told cops that he was standing on Steinway St. near 28th Ave. in Astoria at about 2 a.m. when he saw an armed man charging the group and shooting, police said.
The correction officer whipped out his personal firearm, a Glock 26, and fired two shots at the gunman, who ran off, according to Correction Department records.
