UT: Official State Gun Proposed

Browning Model 1911 .45-Cal Automatic

(Salt Lake City, Utah) In March 1911, the Colt .45-cal automatic was selected after rigorous testing as the official sidearm of the U.S. military. Designed by legendary firearms genius John M. Browning of Utah, the pistol is still in service worldwide.

To commemorate the 100 years of reliable service and powerful durability of the Browning Model 1911 .45-caliber automatic pistol, Utah State Representative Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, has proposed declaring it the state gun.

Support for the proposal is not unanimous. In fact, some believe that merely having a state gun is disturbing because a gun is used to kill.

Not necessarily. Police officers carry guns and their motto is "To Serve and Protect," not "To Serve and Kill."
