I suspect that Holmes was on a prescription anti depressant or coming off one. All the school shootings involved prescription drugs.... SSRI antidepressants.
The knee jerk reaction will be to blame guns. There is an argument to be made that if he had less firepower he would have done less damage but maybe it he had not had the guns he would have tossed in a very powerful bomb.
