Sltoday.com has an article showing oathkeepers protecting Ferguson from looting and arson. While the article starts out calling the volunteer security forces "mysterious", puts Oathkeepers in quotes, and quotes "protesters" who accused the volunteers of being KKK, the article changed tone to one of gratitude from residents in the last half. From stltoday.com:
In operation since Tuesday, group volunteers say they are confident they have helped protect property and lives since they arrived. The group said they are willing to stay as long as it takes. It is hard to argue that modern sporting arms such as the AR15 have no utility in self defense when facing mobs of arsonists and looters such as roamed the streets of Ferguson.
Their only requirement to help is rooftop access.
Victor Clark, a dentist at Ferguson Dental on South Florissant Road, said he was happy to have their free assistance. He wants to reopen soon. On Monday, rioters shattered the front door and window, stole dental needles and anesthetic.
Then Oath Keepers showed up out of the blue. “We gave them our keys,” he said. “We didn’t know that much about them, but we got a feeling of trust. You have to do something to protect our building.”
The piles of rubble and burnt out shells of buildings, formerly housing businesses not connected with the Michael Brown case, are mute testimony to the necessity of citizens being able to defend themselves and their property.
The article mentions that the National Guard was unable to protect property and prevent the mob violence.
“But when Monday rolled around and they didn’t park the National Guard at these businesses, that’s when we said we have got to do something. While I do not expect the acts of altruism and community service by the Oathkeepers to get much play in the old media, the word is getting out.
“Historically, the government almost always fails to protect people,” he added.
An article in The Blaze noted the spontaneous formation of mini-militias in Ferguson to protect their own. This is what normally happens, in a society that understands the rule of law, if it is not prevented by a centralized government.
Most people are not violent and murderous thugs. Most people know that mindless destruction makes everyone poorer. The protection of the ability to defend persons and property from mindless mobs is one of the reasons the second amendment was added to the Constitution.
