In the early reporting on the Maryland Mass Murder, Conor Berry, a reporter from a Massachusetts newspaper, tweeted the shooter dropped his MAGA hat on the newsroom floor before opening fire.
It was a very stupid remark, which Conor has acknowledged. What makes such tweets particularly toxic, is they color early perceptions of events, and tend to become urban myths and the stuff of conspiracy theories.
Conor regrets his error, and has offered up an apology to go along with his resignation. From thehill.com:
"Folks, My 21-year career as a 'journalist,' a fancy term that makes my skin crawl, frankly, came to a screeching halt yesterday with one stupid, regrettable tweet," he wrote. "Can't take it back; wish I could. My sincere apologies to all good, hardworking reporters and to POTUS supporters."In this case, the apology seems to have gotten more traction than the original tweet. The tweet was withdrawn, but still can be found on archives on the Internet. The apology can be found on main stream sources all over the Internet. I did not find the original tweet until the bottom of the third page of a Google search.
