Tennessee: Two Accused Burglars Shot; One Dead: "Memphis Police say two burglars were shot in two separate robbery attempts and one of the crooks is dead. The first robbery attempt happened on East Peebles in South Memphis just before Midnight, Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Investigators say two burglars rammed a car through the Hall Feed and Supply Store. The business owner was in the store at the time and shot one of the crooks, police say. According to investigators, the wounded robber checked himself into the hospital and is in critical condition at the Med. Police say the other crook may have gotten away. Investigators say the first robbery attempt happened on North Avalon Street near Jackson Avenue, around 2:00 a.m., Thursday, January 24th. The homeowner told police that he and his wife woke up when they heard a prowler in the garage. Police say the man took his gun and went to checkout the noise when he discovered the robber. According to investigators, the intruder was shot during a confrontation with the homeowner. The homeowner told police that he had no choice, but to shoot the burglar. Police say when they arrived on the scene the robber was dead. No charges have been filed against the men in these cases"

Texas: Attorney says man killed Marine in self-defense: "Sheriff's Office homicide investigator E.B. Clegg testified that Grewal said he received a threatening phone call at his home from an unknown man just before the shooting. Grewal, Clegg testified, made a statement to investigators in which he said the caller told him that "we are coming, we are gonna get you." Moments later, according to Grewal's statement, Grewal heard someone knocking on his front door and yelling, "I am gonna get you." Grewal then yelled "go away, I have a gun," according to his statement. He said he called 911 and then went on to his second-story balcony and "fired two shots in the air with my AK-47." The man, Grewal said in his statement, remained in his front yard yelling, "We are coming from behind. We are all over." Grewal told investigators he went outside his home and fired another shot in the air when he saw the man coming toward him. Then he saw the man go to his parked car and reach inside it. Grewal said the man then turned around and pointed an unknown object at him. That's when Grewal said he fired. Sarangapani was hit once in the lower side of his chest area, said Derek Hollingsworth, one of Grewal's attorneys. A Grewal neighbor, Norma Shows, said she heard a young man yelling and cursing outside the house. "He was drunk and very angry," Shows testified. "He was using abusive language. There was an escalation in his anger."

In years past, many schoolkids had weapons, but schools were safer: "A popular saying tells us that one sign of insanity is continuing to do the same thing while expecting different results. This statement was never more true than in the case of the so-called 'gun free zones.' It's time for a serious re-evaluation of this failed policy. No matter how well intended, any policy that results in the loss of innocent lives should be examined in the stark light of reality.I grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. Living on a military base and attending a school on the base resulted in constant exposure to guns -- guns of all types. Everyone's parents had guns in the house, and most of us who were old enough to do so ('old enough' often meant 7 years old), had fired guns on many occasions. I can even remember that for one "show and tell" I brought to school a Walther PPK pistol, along with the German military holster. The gun, fully functional, was a souvenir that my father brought home after World War II. Guess what? No one freaked out, the MPs didn't come, and no one was shot. If I remember correctly, the gun was one of the more interesting "show and tell" items, and it sure beat a girl's pet turtle!"
