I would like to see more forensic evidence. Sounds quite unusual. No mention if he was legally armed.
The man told cops he threw his phone at the two muggers as they tried to rob him at Winthrop Street and Brooklyn Avenue in East Flatbush around 10 p.m. Monday. He then fled.
As he was running, the gun in his back pocket discharged, hitting him once, the sources said.

Maybe shot himself as he reached and likely grabbed pistol improperly? A gun in NYC is a big deal, shooting it intentionally an even bigger deal. Fessing up to pulling? Fool's errand. Self shooting gun eliciting sympathy for mugging victim.....who knows.
