Nevada Expands Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity

Nevada has added ten states whose permits it will recognize, dropped Michigan and New Mexico, and will recognize both permits from Idaho and North Dakota instead of only their enhanced permit.   Here is the list of states that Nevada will recognize, as of June 18th, 2015.

Pursuant to SB 175 and AB 488 of the 2015 Legislative Session, the State of Nevada will recognize concealed weapons permits from the following states:

Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
Delaware
Idaho (both types of permits)
Illinois
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Minnesota
Montana
Nebraska
North Carolina
North Dakota (both types of permits)
Ohio
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Tennessee
West Virginia
Wisconsin
Wyoming

The ten states added are:

• WV
• WI
• WY

Both types of permits are now accepted for Idaho and North Dakota.

In 2014, Nevada recognized the permits from these states.  I do not know how  long the link will be good, because the policy has changed

It is unknown why Michigan and New Mexico were dropped from the list, or why more states were not added.

Nevada has a very unusual qualifier for its reciprocity list.  It requires the Nevada Sheriffs' and Chiefs' Association to approve of any state on the list compiled by the Department of Public Safety.   This is a very strange delegation of considerable power to a non-elected entity that is by nature, private.  It seems a poor precedent to give an organization of law enforcers the ability to decide what the law is.

Update: AB488 amends SB175 to remove the Nevada Sheriff's and Chiefs' Association power to veto states from the reciprocity list.

Did Uber Jump the Shark about Guns?

Uber has banned any carry of firearms in vehicles using its app, though the policy has no force of law.  The only penalty for violating the policy is that a user may lose the ability to use Uber software in the future.    From ap.org:

Uber Technologies says it is banning firearms of any kind during rides arranged through the Uber platform, and drivers or riders who violate the rule may lose access to the platform. The rules also apply to Uber's affiliates.

This happens only two months after an armed Uber driver stopped a mass shooting in Chicago, and was widely hailed as saving lives.  

A few minutes after dropping someone off in a presumably povo part of Chicago, he notices a guy running down the sidewalk shooting at a group of people. Next, the driver pulls out his own 100% legal gun and shoots the guy 6 times, injuring the gunman and keeping everyone involved alive.

Other than bowing to the politically correct crowd, it is hard to see how Uber benefits from this policy.  There are far more gun owners than gun haters in the United States, and in most of the rest of the word those who legally own guns are in the elite, politically connected, upper or upper middle class.   

Uber's previous policy was to simply follow local law.  Uber joins its competing organization, Lyft, which has a "no weapons" policy.

Perhaps a competitor who is more tolerant will be engendered.  The most likely result is that the policy will be ignored by most, but resented by many.

AZ: Gun Friendly Rest Stops (and a snake)

I have been doing some traveling the last couple of days, so the output is down.  The scenery has been great, and in getting ready for the trip I encountered the snake pictured above.   I believe it is a red coachwhip, aptly named, as it is so long and slender.  This specimen was about four feet long.  It was sunning itself in a tire track on the way out to the ranch.

I find desert wildlife fascinating, and I try not to kill any without good reason.   I stopped, took some pictures, and intimidated the snake off the track before continuing on my way.

A short way into the trip, I stopped at the Sentinel rest area.  I had not stopped there in a while, and I wanted to check to see if they had the proper signs. They did.

If you read the list of prohibitions, you will not find any that involve guns or being armed.  Activists fought for that restoration of freedom back in the 1990's.   Someone in the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) had independently decided to ban guns at rest stops in Arizona.  I never found who made the decision to ban guns, but second amendment activists noticed, and forced replacement of the signs.  I intend to stop at each rest area along the way and see if the proper signs are in place.

Banning the carry of firearms at rest stops is an attempt to make the routine exercise of the Second Amendment inconvenient,frustrating, and legally hazardous. 

It is a direct infringement and attack on the Constitution.

SC Church Shooting was in "Gun Free" Zone

Nine people were killed late Wednesday at Charleston Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.  The white killer is still at large.
Not surprising that yet another mass public shooting has taken place where guns were banned.  Yet, again, the ban only ensured that the victims were vulnerable.  Here is a synopsis of South Carolina law:

• You may not carry a firearm on school premises (including day care and preschool facilities), in law enforcement offices or facilities, in court facilities, at polling places on election days, in churches or other religious sanctuaries,or in hospitals or medical facilities. (S.C. Code Ann.§ 23-31-215.)

FL: Resident shoot Burglary Suspects

A resident at 406 Carmel Drive in the Fort Walton Beach area says two men tried to force their way into his home around 12:40 p.m. He says one of the men was armed with a gun. The resident was able to get to his firearm and fired multiple shots at the suspects. Both men were hit, one multiple times.

NC: Gunfight - Victim Wounded, 1 of 3 Robbers Dead

Deputies said three men approached a resident as he was trying to get into his vehicle and pointed handguns at him demanding money.

The man pulled a revolver from his vehicle and started shooting. The robbers returned fire, hitting the man in the abdomen.

The three robbers then fled on foot. Deputies found one of them lying along Lubbock Drive wearing latex gloves on his hands and a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Douglas Raeford.

Followup GA: No Charges for Shed Shooter

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -- Police say they won't charge a homeowner who shot a burglar outside his home Tuesday night.

The suspect was caught trying to steal items from the homeowner's boat and shed.

Henry County Police said they responded to the home on Leigh Drive in Ellenwood at around 11:30 p.m. They said it was the second time the homeowner was burglarized.

TX: Clerk's Handgun Beats Robber's Shotgun

FORT WORTH — Police say a clerk at the Lincoln Grocery Store in Fort Worth shot an armed man dead during an attempted robbery.

Authorities are searching for two men who fled the scene.

FL: 72-Year-Old uses .22 to Subdue Attacker

Police said the 72-year-old victim told Varela to leave, but Varela grabbed the victim by the neck and knocked him down on the floor.

Varela then hid in a bedroom, at which point the victim grabbed his .22-caliber gun and fired one shot in Varela's direction, police said.

Police said Varela wasn't hit by the bullet but fell to the ground and hid under a mattress.

Neighbors eventually helped the victim subdue Varela until officers arrived.

The drama at a semi-pro football game held in New Castle Saturday evening happened off the field when two representatives of the Indiana Trybe fought and one ended up being hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the head, according to information from the Kentucky State Police.

SD Followup: Video used to Clear Woman of all Charges in Killing

A Box Elder woman who faced a murder charge in the September shooting death of her boyfriend was cleared of all charges Tuesday after a video of the incident was reviewed by a national expert who concluded she acted in self defense.

State's Attorney Mark Vargo announced Tuesday that Kelly Ann Croyle, 24, was cleared of a pending second-degree murder charge in the Sept. 9, 2014 shooting death of 49-year-old father of three Richard "Dickey" Mashek in his Box Elder home.

FL: Neighbors Defend Man who Shot Dogs

Family members of the man who shot two Rottweilers in Nassau County this past weekend, killing one, are speaking out.

They are joining neighbors who say the animals were constantly getting out, creating a threat.

According to a deputy's report, they got loose and charged Michael Clemons and his family.

"Gotta carry my gun to get the mail and take out the trash," said John Chandler, a neighbor.

Chandler says Amy Seus' two Rottweilers roamed his neighborhood, getting more aggressive in the last few months.

GA: More on Shed Shooting in Henry County

Henry County Police Lt. Joey Smith said the homeowner returned from work to find his shed being burglarized. The victim keeps a boat in the shed. He told police his dog alerted him to the structure's open door.

The homeowner went into the shed and found a man trying to take items. Smith said the victim tried to detain the suspect at gunpoint; at some point, the suspect was shot in the abdomen.

PA: Boyfriend shoots estranged Husband in Self Defense

It happened around midnight at a home on Mayfield Road, just a few blocks away from Buhl Park. Police said Nick Ference, 36, showed up at the home of his estranged wife and forced his way inside.

Investigators said Ference threatened to kill the woman’s boyfriend and started chasing him into the basement. The boyfriend had a gun and shot Ference in the chest. He then called 911 and surrendered to police, according to Sharpsville Police Chief Keith Falasco.

AZ: Man Acting strangly Shot by Homeowner

At about 1:30 p.m., police responded to the midtown neighborhood to a report of suspicious activity. Police received further reports of a man jumping in and out of residences' back yards, Bay said.

At about 2 p.m., police responded to a business on Speedway where the suspect sought help after he was shot by a homeowner, said Bay.

ADAM B. SUMMERS: Killing two constitutional rights with one stone

Supporters of the Second Amendment have much to be proud of in recent years, from Supreme Court victories such as Heller and McDonald, to the relaxation or elimination of various states’ restrictions on the right to carry and the defeat of federal gun control measures pushed during the emotionally-charged wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. Moreover, violent crime rates, and gun crimes in particular, have enjoyed a long, steady decline while, at the same time, gun sales and deregulation have increased, providing empirical support for the “more guns, less crime” theory. But this has not deterred the Obama administration from seeking more controls on law-abiding gun owners.

President Barack Obama signed 23 gun-related executive orders in the weeks following the Sandy Hook tragedy, though their effects were limited. The Justice Department recently announced that it is pursuing at least a dozen gun regulations that gun rights organizations contend are infringements upon the constitutional rights of many harmless individuals, including veterans, and would render victims of domestic violence defenseless against abusive spouses. Now, the State Department is revising arms trafficking regulations and redefining them so as to stifle discussion of guns and ammunition specifications over the Internet.

MN: Restaurant Owner shot former Employee

On Monday authorities released the name of a man who was shot and killed as Otoniel Carranza, 32, of Bemidji, but a release from Sheriff Phil Hodapp did not disclose any other information, including who the shooter was and what charges that person may or may not face.

However, Mendoza said he shot Carranza to protect himself and other employees in the restaurant.

NC: Man Shoots Burglary Suspect

Winston-Salem Police responded to the private residence at 1575 Pecan Lane. The homeowner was woken up by an alarm activation on his property and responded outside to check. While investigating the alarm activation, the homeowner told FOX8 he saw at least one person inside his shed.

He then discharged a firearm.

TN: Man sees Girlfriend held at Gunpoint; Shoots, Kills Attacker

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A man who attempted to rob an East Knoxville convenience store early Monday morning was shot and killed by a bystander, according to Knoxville Police Department.

Officers responded to the Breadbox located on the 6200 block of Asheville Highway around 2:35 a.m after receiving a call that shots had been fired.

When officials arrived, they found Tamon J. Stapleton, 18, dead with a gunshot wound. Police say Stapleton, armed with a 9mm handgun, had entered the store and was forcing the female clerk behind the counter at gunpoint.

A male friend of the clerk, who was outside the store in his parked vehicle, witnessed the attempted robbery, retrieved his handgun, entered the store and fired one shot, hitting Stapleton.
