Dave Workman: CCRKBA calls for B. Todd Jones’ departure at ATF

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today called on B. Todd Jones to step down as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or be fired in the wake of what the group called a “colossal blunder” by the agency in proposing a ban on certain ammunition for the popular AR-15 rifle.

CCRKBA’s call for Jones’ departure follows yesterday’s sudden retreat by the ATF on its proposal to re-classify the popular .223-caliber M855 ammunition as “armor piercing.” CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said it was a clear victory for grassroots Second Amendment activism, no matter how short lived it may turn out to be.

The agency only said that it will "further evaluate the issues raised therein, and provide additional open and transparent process (for example, through additional proposals and opportunities for comment) before proceeding with any framework." That left gun rights groups concerned that this battle is not finished.

“I’ve put a lot more thought into this than the ATF apparently did when it suggested that the M855 ammunition should be re-classified,” Gottlieb said in a press release issued a short time ago. “But when Jones took over the agency, first as an acting director in 2011 and then became the permanent director in 2013, the public, and especially the Second Amendment community, had high hopes that he would straighten out the ATF. This ammunition ban blunder clearly shows that he hasn’t.”
