But Reyes had his own plans. Silvas says he tried to stab him multiple times with the same screwdriver he used to dismantle the trucks's ignition.

And Silvas couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that his gun, his only shot at self-defense, was still inside his truck. But somehow Reyes didn’t see it. Silvas says he managed to grab his weapon and fire a shot.

"When I did it, I fired away in the air," said Silvas, who was worried someone might get hurt.

The shots scared the suspect off. Police were able to catch him down the street.
