Kneeling in front of the open safe, Martin says the unidentified man put the gun on his thigh to free up both hands. That's when Martin turned the tables.
"I see his friend over there diddling with cigarettes," he pointed out. "I'm standing right here; [I] go right for it; boom I run."
Around the desk, with the gun he took from the robber, Martin almost made it to the door before he got tackled. The impact sent the first gun shot ripping through the store.
"And I'm sliding toward the door - boom," Martin described what happened as he lined up the second shot but missed. "That was the shot that went through the Frio can, that hit the tea and got into the wall."
