This video shows the value of the familiarization with guns and basic gun safety training, such as the Eddie Eagle NRA program. You have to go to the very last part of the video to see the important result. There are eight children. Of the eight, two of the children are from homes that have legal firearms. Those children have been familiarized with guns and taught not to play with them. From the video:
"There were only 2 kids that did not pick up the gun [...] They are the kids who have guns in their homes and whose parents say they have talked extensively about guns."
This deserves emphasis. Of the eight children, only the two who already had guns in their homes, and who had been taught about them, did not pick up the gun. That is the message taught by the NRA EddieEagle program. From eddieeagle.nra.org:
The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® program is a gun accident prevention program that seeks to help parents, law enforcement, community groups and educators navigate a topic paramount to our children’s safety. Eddie and his Wing Team are on a mission to help you teach Pre-K through 4th graders what to do if they ever come across a gun…
America is the most prosperous nation on earth. It has the most guns of any nation on earth. There are about 400 million privately owned guns in the United States. Millions more are being added to the private stock every month. Those guns are not going away. If you want your child to be safe around guns, they have to be taught about them. This video illustrates that very clearly.
Trying to deny the existence of guns, or simply telling your child that guns are "bad" and making them into "forbidden fruit", does not solve the problem.
Remember: You cannot remove guns from society. That option is impossible and off the table. Even if those who want to remove guns from society were to succeed by repealing the Second Amendment and imposing draconian gun control, it could not possibly happen before your children are grown. Your children will grow up in a society with 400 million guns.
Teach your children about guns, or have a friend who is a gun owner do so. Do not expect ignorance to protect them. For that matter, do not expect ignorance about guns to protect you.
