AZ: Gun Beats Hammer, Intruders run Off
The homeowner said that two suspects woke him up by holding down his feet and striking him in the stomach with a hammer, officials said.
One of the suspects, 35-year-old William Barkacs, asked the victim where his gun was. The victim grabbed his gun and pointed it at the pair who ran away, police said.

Some people you just don't ask them where there gun is, they may be just too willing to show you. after being struck with a hammer I would be more than willing to show them how well it works.
This one is odd. Holding someone down while hitting them on the "stomach" with a hammer.
This sort of goes back to the days of dueling. the attacker does not get to choose the weapon you defend yourself with. It is where the saying comes from never take a knife to what could be a gun fight. apparently the attackers knew the victim had a gun and they chose to bring a hammer. touching him in his home and being in his home was the criminal at that would allow a self defense action. I would have shot both of them. why give them a chance to try it again.
Hitting him with a hammer in the stomach/abdomen is criminal assault. if they had ruptured a liver, spleen or his bowel he could have died of internal injuries. they could be charged with attempted murder.
