Brazil Becomes Top Emerging Nation To Download 3D Printed Gun

Brazil is the No. 1 emerging market in search for blueprints for the Liberator, the 3D printable handgun reported on here at Forbes on May 5.

Brazil is third behind the United States and Spain in the number of internet users currently in a mad rush to download the blueprints to the Liberator, the world’s first printable hand gun, the Liberator’s creators at Defense Distributed said.

Between Monday and Thursday alone, the blueprints were downloaded by more than 100,000 people from the website Mega.com.nz, run by Kim Dotcom, considered by U.S. authorities as public enemy No. 1 when it comes to internet piracy.

Exact download numbers from Brazil were not provided.

The Liberator is almost entirely plastic. Fifteen of its 16 pieces have been created inside an $8,000 Stratasys Dimension SST 3D printer, a machine that lays down threads of melted polymer that add up to precisely-shaped solid objects just as easily as a traditional printer lays ink on a page, Andy Greenberg reported for Forbes. The only non-printed piece is a common hardware store nail used as its firing pin.

No surprise that Brazilians top the list of downloaders. The country, while not necessarily gun aficionados, are internet savvy and quick to jump onto digital trends.
