Mr. Farnan, an ex-Marine and former Pittsburgh police officer, had said the fight began when Mr. Evans hit him on top of the head as he nodded off at the bar around closing time. The two then fought and fell to the floor. During the scuffle, Mr. Farnan. who was carrying a gun on his belt holster, said Mr. Evans tried to get at the gun. Mr. Farnan got to the weapon first and fired six times.
