PI’s Connelly wrong: Gun owners also victims of ‘acceptable prejudice’

The on-line Seattle P-I.com’s Joel Connelly wondered today if “anti-Catholicism (has) become the country's ‘last acceptable prejudice?’”

Northwest gun rights advocates might ask what Connelly – a liberal and something of a Seattle icon – would say about this remark, perhaps from one of his “progressive” contemporaries: “Gun nuts are the irrational dregs of society.”

That was one of several comments posted by readers of the Seattle Times in reaction to a Wednesday editorial headlined “Lawmakers favor gun lobby over voters on background check bill.”

When it comes to social bigotry, Catholics might have to take a back seat to gun owners as victims of viciousness from the anti-gun Left.

Connelly was discussing how the church is faring these days in a column that is hardly coincidental to the naming of its new Pope Francis, a “man of the cloth” who so far appears to be bringing his rather modest lifestyle as something of a culture shock to the Vatican City. Connelly acknowledges that he recently “returned to the Catholic church” and there is still much with which he disagrees. However, he doesn’t take issue with the church the way anti-gunners take issue with people who own firearms.

OK: Armed Home Invader Shot and Killed

BRYAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says a resident shot and killed a gunman who broke into a Bryan County home early Thursday morning.

OSBI agents say 27-year-old Parker Allen Tyson kicked in the door of a home at 14 Main Street around 12:30 a.m. He was armed with a handgun at the time.

When Tyson entered the house, the resident fired his own handgun at Tyson, striking him several times. An ambulance rushed Tyson to a hospital in Durant. Tyson died about two hours later.

The Second Amendment as a Prophylactic

A common argument from those who are in favor of more stringent gun control laws is that the necessity of firearms in the hands of citizens as a “check” against an out-of-control government is simply not needed in this day and age.

America has a mature, stable government, they say, and the possibility of it suddenly going off the rails and needing to be “taken back” by its citizens is simply preposterous. They cite history as showing that the government has never been that overbearing, and there’s never been a need in over two centuries for the armed citizens to rise up. Therefore there will never be such a need.

This view is very shortsighted and misses out on the prime role of the Second Amendment. I’ll leave it to others to defend the concept that a citizen militia can force the government back onto the right track. I want to concentrate of the Second Amendment as a prophylactic.

Merriam-webster.com defines a prophylactic as:

1: guarding from or preventing the spread or occurrence of disease or infection

2: tending to prevent or ward off: preventive

It comes from the Greek words prophylaktikos and prophylassein; to be on guard, from pro- before + phylassein to guard, from phylak-, phylax guard.

The best known use of the word in the general public is probably when it is referred to in birth control. An example would be when a condom is referred to as a prophylactic.

Medical staff use the concept on a daily basis, as many medicines are used as a prophylactic to keep diseases away. A smallpox or measles vaccination is an example. Sterilizing the equipment used for patient treatment is a prophylactic measure, along with washing hands frequently.

3D Printing: Defense Distributed's Vision (Weapons and much more)

Defense Distributed is creating a searchable database for 3D printed objects that others wish to suppress. The intent of the database has expanded far beyond 3D printed firearms, though firearms are still a focus of their efforts.

The vision of a free and open source of 3D printable objects extends far beyond what is possible today, taking us into the realms of what is possible in the foreseeable future, when additive technology will reach down to the nanoscale level.

At that point, it will be possible to create nearly anything that is possible under the constraints of the existing universe. Drugs? Designer organs? Armed drones the size of Mosquitoes?

All are possible within known constraints.

Cody Wilson and Defense Distributed’s vision is to make sure that everyone has access to all such information. You can see his presentation of their vision at the link.

The presentation is a little less than three minutes long and works well for those with modest Internet connections. It has limited video.

IL:Church Celebrates 2nd Amendment, Kids Make Pop-Tart Guns During Sunday School

This past Sunday, a Chicago area church sponsored a Second Amendment Sunday filled with “assault” pop-tarts, “combat” cupcakes and a sheet-cake that featured a chocolate semi-automatic Glock handgun with a quote from Jesus that read “Blessed are the peacemakers.” John Kirkwood, Pastor of Grace-Gospel Fellowship in Bensenville Illinois said the idea came to him after reading a column by Doug Giles entitled “Christian Parents Should Have Their Kids Play With Toy Guns.”

“Giles has a way of exposing the absurdity of the left,” said Kirkwood, “his article was in response to some Pastor from St. Louis and his ‘toy gun’ buyback program. That and the news about 7 year olds getting suspended for threatening pop-tarts and menacing cupcakes led me to stand up for true American values and the Biblical wisdom that underlies them.” The Pastor, referring to two recent cases in which a pop-tart shaped like a handgun and cupcakes topped by plastic soldiers brought on what many felt was over-the-top school discipline, decided to respond in kind.

“We had an ‘assault’ pop-tart challenge in our Jr. Church where each child who wanted to participate chewed a pop-tart into the shape of a gun and the top four would win prizes; in this case a toy gun,” said Kirkwood, “the guns were named for celebrities.”

“Second runner up received a double barrel shot-gun that we nicknamed ‘The Biden,’ and when we presented it we made sure to say what ‘not’ to do with it in a real situation. The prize for runner up was a Navy Seal sniper rifle that we named ‘The Chris Kyle’ in honor of the American Sniper. We felt that it was appropriate,” added Kirkwood, “given the insulting way that this administration ignored the death of this American hero, yet had the crust to send a delegation to the memorial service for Hugo Chavez.”

Constitutional or “Permitless” Carry in Play in Several States

In spite of the enormous push for more infringements on citizen’s Second Amendment rights by the old media and their “progressive” legislative allies, several states continue to work toward restoring rights lost in the last century’s growth in governmental power.

South Dakota, South Carolina, Utah, Georgia, Montana, and Nevada all have bills pending that would implement Constitutional, or permitless carry.

Utah is the most likely to pass a measure into law first, as veto proof majorities have already passed a bill. It only needs Governor Herbert’s signature to become law. This version varies from other state’s Constitutional carry in that it requires the firearm to be carried with an empty chamber.

In an unusual turn of events, Illinois is on the table for possible Constitutional carry. A federal appeals court ruled that their status as the only state in the country that does not have a provision for carry outside the home is unconstitutional. They have until June 10th to pass legislation to remedy this defect. If the legislature and governor fail to pass a law by the deadline, they could default to Constitutional carry. Some Illinois counties have passed Constitutional carry referendums.

This possibility looms larger because of differences between the state legislature and the Governor. The legislature passed a shall issue concealed carry bill in 2011, but it was blocked by the Governor and his allies. Illinois has an unusual provision in the law that requires a super-majority to pass legislation that is not approved of by Chicago.

If the Governor refuses to sign a shall issue bill into law, the legislature could refuse to pass any carry law, thus defaulting to Constitutional carry, as its statues prohibiting defensive carry outside the home have been ruled unconstitutional.

In 2012, Constitutional carry passed legislatures in Montana, New Hampshire, and South Dakota, but was vetoed by their respective Governors.

Modified Constitutional Carry Passes Both Utah Houses with Veto Proof Margin

SALT LAKE CITY — A showdown between Gov. Gary Herbert and state lawmakers could be coming now that the Utah Legislature has passed a so-called "constitutional carry" gun law.

The Senate passed HB76 Wednesday by a vote of 22-7, with all five Democrats and two Republicans voting against it.

Although Herbert has stopped short of saying he would veto HB76, he reiterated several times that Utah's gun laws aren't broken and don't need changing. But should he reject the bill, the Legislature could override his veto with a two-thirds majority vote.

The measure passed by more than a two-thirds majority in both the House (51-18) and the Senate, making it "veto proof" provided lawmakers who favored the bill wouldn't change their minds in an override session.

Leftists Hate Gun Culture

"Progressives" hate limits of government the most. Dean Weingarten

Gun control efforts are largely a culture-war offensive by liberals who dislike the parts of America that own guns and love guns. This meddling motivation shines through in the rhetoric of gun control advocates and in the laws they push.

For many gun owners, the firearm is not merely a tool for the practical purpose of self-defense. Nor is it simply recreational equipment, like a golf club. It's a cultural signifier, and a totem of a worldview.

Dan Baum, a Jewish liberal who wears turtlenecks but also owns guns, writes in his new book, "Gun Guys," that firearms in America have long represented "a worldview that, broadly defined, valued the individual over the collective, vigorous outdoorsiness over pallid intellectualism, certainty over questioning ... Now We Know Why Schumer Has Been Hiding The Bill

I pulled up S.374 - Protecting Responsible Gun Sellers Act of 2013 on Thomas, and I came up with a two-page shell of a bill that means nothing. To ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale. Well, gosh! Who could have a problem with that, right? I mean, didn’t the panel of gun banners last night at the town hall tell us that these are just common-sense measures to prevent people who shouldn’t have guns from having them? At first glance it’s a pretty easy bill. A BILL
To ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. Short title.

This Act may be cited as the “Protecting Responsible Gun Sellers Act of 2013”.

SEC. 2. Findings.

Congress makes the following findings:

(1) Congress supports and respects the right to bear arms found in the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

(2) Congress supports the existing prohibition on a national firearms registry.

(3) There are deficits in the background check system in effect before the date of enactment of this Act and the Department of Justice should make it a top priority to work with States to swiftly input missing records, including mental health records.

(4) If the citizens of the United States agree that in order to promote safe and responsible gun ownership criminals and the mentally ill should be prohibited from possessing firearms, it should be incumbent upon all citizens to ensure weapons are not being transferred to such people.

Who could possibly have a problem with a bill like this, right?

Well, there’s obviously a reason sleazy Chuckie Schumer hid the text of the bill until it passed committee! Because when legisleeches ask who could possibly oppose a bill to keep guns out of the wrong hands, they mean YOUR hands.

No more private sales, folks! Each transaction will have to go through an FFL, after paying a fee set by…

…the Justice Department!

Does anyone else see anything wrong with allowing Eric Holder – the man embroiled in a scandalous program that funneled thousands of firearms to Mexican drug cartels – to set a fee for a private transfer of a firearm? Heck, all he has to do is set the price prohibitively high, and he’s just prevented a whole lot of people from exercising their rights!

Karen Marangi from Mayors Against Illegal Guns made it a point to tell us that gifts between family members and spouses, as well as firearms passed through estates are exempt from the bill’s onerous provisions. A temporary transfer of a firearm doesn’t have to go through an FFL either… IF the temporary transfer of possession occurs in the home or curtilage of the unlicensed transferor; IF the firearm is not removed from that home or curtilage during the temporary transfer; and IF the transfer has a duration of less than seven days.

So what if I go TDY for a month, like I will this summer, and Rob has my firearm for a month? We’re not married. An overzealous prosecutor may charge me with an unauthorized transfer.

Oh, and by the way – if we happen to come home and our house has been ransacked by robbers, our possessions strewn all over the house, our home destroyed, our possessions, including my firearms stolen…

…I’d better have those things reported to the police within 24 hours. No getting over the victimization. No taking a breath to get over the shock. Report it, or you’re in violation of federal law.

Same if you lose a gun on a trip. Your ass had better get back within 24 hours to report it, or it’s prison for you!

You know what?

No thanks!

No wonder that swine Chuckles kept this bill under wraps until the last minute!

If you haven’t read this thing, you need to.

Source: The Liberty Zone

Note that this bill prohibits you from teaching a friend to shoot, because that would involve a "transfer" of a gun outside your home or curtilage.

It essentially shuts down teaching most people to shoot, until *after* they have bought a gun.

Note that in Chicago, you are not allowed to buy a gun until you show that you have been taught to shoot.

Registration leads to Confiscation in California

The anti-freedom types insist that registration never leads to confiscation. Dean Weingarten

Wearing bulletproof vests and carrying 40-caliber Glock pistols, nine California Justice Department agents assembled outside a ranch-style house in a suburb east of Los Angeles. They were looking for a gun owner who’d recently spent two days in a mental hospital.

They knocked on the door and asked to come in. About 45 minutes later, they came away peacefully with three firearms.

--------------------cut--------------------------

“Very, very few states have an archive of firearm owners like we have,” said Wintemute, who helped set up the program.

------------------cut----------------------------

At a house in Fontana, agents were looking for a gun owner with a criminal history of a sex offense, pimping, according to the attorney general’s office. Marsh said that while the woman appeared to be home, they got no answer at the door. Without a warrant, the agents couldn’t enter and had to leave empty- handed.

They had better luck in nearby Upland, where they seized three guns from the home of Lynette Phillips, 48, who’d been hospitalized for mental illness, and her husband, David. One gun was registered to her, two to him.

“The prohibited person can’t have access to a firearm,” regardless of who the registered owner is, said Michelle Gregory, a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office.

--------------------cut--------------------------

In an interview as agents inventoried the guns, Lynette Phillips said that while she’d been held involuntarily in a mental hospital in December, the nurse who admitted her had exaggerated the magnitude of her condition.
