FL: Fort Pierce Gunfight, Unclear Victims and Aggressors - Four Wounded

The sheriff said the situation is so convoluted that they are still trying to determine who are the victims and who are the suspects.

The scene on the 3600 block of Avenue R was marked by police tape and dozens of yellow placards, each indicating a bullet fired during the incident.

"This was a full-blown shootout here in broad daylight," said St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro.

Sheriff Del Toro said two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old used a messaging app to arrange a gun purchase from three other individuals.

"A little concerning considering the fact you have people of this age group dealing with firearms, illegal firearms transactions," he said.

Cross or X in Sky Marks the Spot on way to Shot Show 2026

Yesterday, January 18, this correspondent was driving on the way to Las Vegas for the Shot Show, 2026. In Nevada, on highway 95, contrails showed a remarkable cross or X in the sky. The cross was very close to the section of Highway 95 dedicated to US veterans from WWII on up.

This correspondent served in the Cold War, so it was nice to see the sign.

I will be at the Shot Show this week, so blog articles may be a little spotty.

Today will be Industry Day at the Range.  It appears the weather will be cool, with relatively mild temperatures.

NICS December 2025, Gun Sales Down 4.1% for the Year

The National Instant Background Check System (NICS) numbers, adjusted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) have dropped 3.4% below December of 2024 and 4.1% below the adjusted sales for 2024 for the entire year of 2025.

The pattern of adjusted NICS checks is remarkably similar to that of 2024, with slight variations. A minor variation is in 2024, August numbers were higher than in September.  In 2025, the numbers climb from a low in July to a maximum in December. From NSSF:

The December 2025 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,587,049 is a decrease of 3.4 percent compared to the December 2024 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,642,270. For comparison, the unadjusted December 2025 FBI NICS figure of 2,220,852 reflects a 16.1 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,647,933 in December 2024.

The annual 2025 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 14,612,314 reflects a decrease of 4.1 percent compared to the 15,239,011 figure for annual 2024.

The chart of annual adjusted NICS numbers show a gradual decline in annual firearm sales from the peak during the tumultuous and hotly contested election of 2020 through most of the first year of President Trump's second term. President Trump has recorded success after success during the past year. Most people in the gun culture are seeing both greater domestic stability and a lower level of international chaos and crises. A form of shaky peace has been imposed on the middle east. Iran has been rendered nearly impotent, as have its proxies, the Houtis, Hezbollah, and Hamas.  President Trump has had success in damping down hot spots between Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, DRC and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. While peace has yet to break out between Ukraine and Russia, serious talks are occurring.

On the domestic front, Inflation is down, the stock market is up, GDP is increasing and energy prices are down. As the United States enters the new year, prosperity appears to be breaking out and violent crime has been falling. The numbers are not completed for 2025. The trend has been toward 2025 setting the record for the lowest homicide rate ever recorded in the United States. We will not know if a record has been set for another month or two.

An upturn in international and domestic affairs may have reduced motivations to purchase firearms. It is possible greater prosperity could incentivize people to spend more disposable income. Such potential is not showing up in the NICS figures at this time.

When the NICS adjusted figures are compared to the more accurate ATF figures from Firearms Commerce in the United States, the averages have been converging. ATF figures are reported a year and a half later than NICS, to respect manufacturers' property rights. The numbers from 2000 - 2023 show the number of firearms added to  private stock to be 90% of the numbers shown in the NICS adjusted figures. When the last decade of available numbers are used, 2014-2023, the ATF numbers are 98% of the NICS adjusted numbers.  It seems likely the last two years have added 30 million more firearms to the private stock in the United States. This equates to a total of 540 million firearms in the USA at the end of 2025.

How close is the United States to market saturation? Considerable growth is possible. If growth continues in the USA, a miracle may happen. The debt and budget deficit may be brought under control. Such would seem impossible for any president other than President Trump. It would be impossible if we were not on the brink of incredible technological breakthroughs such as fusion power, autonomous vehicles, breakthrough reductions in cost to orbit, and... even... increasingly powerful artificial intelligence. Any one of these technologies, if widely implemented, has the potential of enormous increases in productivity.

The elimination of the $200 tax on silencers, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, and any other weapons (AOW) in the National Firearms Act (NFA) has the potential to unleash significant demand. Such demand would be multiplied if those items are completely removed from the NFA, as seems possible, but not probable in the next year. Unconfirmed reports show applications for Form 1 and Form 4 from the ATF has reached over 250,000 in the first week of 2026. The table has been set for a more prosperous year in 2026.

Rollingout.com Pushes Anti-Firearm Propaganda and Everytown Research

An article published on rollingout.com claims to "debunk" myths about guns with "real data". All the "real data" used is from advocates who oppose the ownership of guns. If you skip to the end of the article, the source listed for the numbers used in the article is everytownresearch. Everytownresearch is one of the propaganda arms of the anti-Second Amendment organization Everytown for Gun Safety, financed by Michael Bloomberg, a stanch anti-Second Amendment advocate. To use such a source to "debunk" myths is similar to asking the Flat Earth Society to "debunk" myths about gravity.

The pitch starts with the presumption some nebulous entity called "the gun industry" has "spent decades convincing people that danger lurks around every corner" . This is a peculiar and highly dubious statement. Gun makers are shut out of most major media. You do not see ads for guns on major television shows. You don't see ads for guns at the Superbowl. You hardly see any ads showing guns used defensively against crime. Most social networks vigorously ban advertisements of weapons. To claim otherwise is a Marxian fantasy. The old dominant media often parrot anti-Second Amendment myths. Such dominance is fading.

Having grown up in the gun culture in the decades referred to in the article, there is some truth about the danger of crime to families being overemphasized. It isn't by the "gun industry". It is by the old media, movies, television shows, and the emphasis of media on violent crime.  This correspondent recalls many television shows which would have become much shorter if the "victims" were armed.

Yes, the gun culture in the United States has shifted from hunting to personal protection, target shooting, and protection from government tyranny. It is a reasonable shift which goes with the shift from a rural culture to an urban culture.

The society in the USA has become much more affluent and fractured. People are more concerned about safety. The number of firearms in society is not related to the number of homicides and violent crime in society.

A significant number of gun owners see guns as an insurance policy, similar to a fire extinguisher in your home. The Rollingout.com writer notes that violent crimes have dropped in recent years. Crime and risk from crime is highly individual and specific. Violent crime rises and falls.  Risk depends on individual circumstances as to whether a firearm is useful or not. Your risk depends a great deal on your circumstances and your neighborhood. As with a fire extinguisher, a firearm for personal protection may never be needed. If it is, the need is often immediate and severe.

The article leans heavily on the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which does not ask about defensive gun uses. The defensive use of a firearm is only discovered if the defender self-identifies as a victim of a crime. Unsurprisingly, it is an outlier in surveys about how often firearms are used defensively. The author tries to make some point about how most perpetrators of crime are not armed with guns. This is true, but points out exactly why guns are so effective for defense.

The article cherry picks statistics from victimization surveys, and from anti-Second Amendment activists.

Unsurprisingly, the article ignores research which contradicts the narrative that "guns are bad".  There is no mention of minority women in crime ridden urban centers benefiting the most from being able to legally defend themselves with weapons. No mention of gun "buybacks" being associated with small, but statistically significant increases in crime. No mention of homicide rates rising in countries where bans on guns are imposed. No mention of suicide rates persisting when gun bans are put into effect, and other methods are substituted. No mention of a correlation with the legal carry of guns and decreased homicide rates. These effects are debated, but there is debate. To ignore these findings is intellectually dishonest.

This correspondent has read most of the academic literature in the debate about whether ownership of firearms has a positive or negative effect on safety. The largest drivers of suicide and homicide rates are cultural. England had much lower rates of homicide than the United States when the United States had stricter gun control than England did, about 1914. The homicide rate in England rose as they instituted more gun control.  Gun control in England was about political control, not crime.

The ownership of firearms plays a relatively small role in suicide and homicide rates. Firearms are popular because firearms increase personal power. They can play major roles in individual circumstances. A 100 lb woman with a gun is on par with a 250 lb man.  Firearms even out power imbalances created by muscle, mass and age. Firearms are great equalizers for women.

In the United States, the debate about small effects on safety is winding down. It is becoming irrelevant because rights protected by the Second Amendment are being restored. If a person thinks they cannot responsibly handle firearm ownership, the are not required to own a gun. Police officers, who deal with criminal violence on a regular basis, reject this notion.

The Rollingout article ignores the Second Amendment, because the Second Amendment renders their argument superfluous.  There are over 500 million firearms in private hands in the United States. Firearm ownership is popular, and becoming more popular. Firearms are fun, firearms are effective, firearms are often used to protect the innocent.  The repeal of the Second Amendment is a totalitarian wish, which would render the Constitution toothless.

Florida Bear Hunt Harvests Paltry 52 Bears

Bear approaches door of home. Image from Winter Springs, Florida, Police Department

he Florida 2025 black bear hunt has been a flop as an attempt to manage the bear population in Florida. It may have been successful as a trial run on how to manage a bear hunt. Only 52 bears were harvested. To keep a stable population, at least 600 bears should have been harvested, probably 1500. About 15 % of a black bear population needs to be harvested to keep a stable population.   From myfwc.com:

There were 52 bears harvested during the 2025 bear hunt, which is a hunter success rate very close to other states with similar hunt parameters. All harvested bears were physically checked by FWC staff and bear response contractors, providing valuable data that will influence future management strategies. Analysis of the data collected is underway, and a full harvest report will be released in the coming months.

In 2024, 295 Florida bears were killed in vehicular accidents. One thing missing from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) press release is an estimate of the population of bears in Florida. This important number is essential when managing a wildlife population. The last official estimate is from 2014-2015, over a decade ago. An estimate was supposed to be done in 2025. The FWC now says a population estimate may be done by 2029. In 2014-2015, the estimate put the Florida bear population at 4,350 bears. In the 2019 Florida Black Bear Management Plan, the best estimate showed an expected bear population in 2026-2027 of 11,088. This is very close to the estimate of pre-Columbian bear population of 11,500.  These estimates do not include cubs.

The estimate of 11,088 bears is for the four largest subpopulations of bears in Florida. The three smallest subpopulations in Florida added another 238 bears in 2014-2015. Those populations have probably doubled in the last decade. Other than vehicle accidents, the largest killer of bears in Florida is the adult male bear. Adult male bears kill (and usually eat) about 1/2 of cubs before the cubs become independent. Boar bears almost certainly kill over a thousand bear cubs in Florida every year.

When adult male bears are harvested by human hunters, they kill fewer cubs. More bear cubs have a chance to become adults. To stabilize a bear population, about 10-15% of the adult bears have to be harvested every year. In Michigan, the bear harvest has been about 15% of the bear population for many years. The Michigan bear population continues to grow. Bear harvests in Michigan average over 1,700 per year, from a bear population of 12,000.  We do not know the bear population in Florida, because the FWC has been rather slow in measuring the population. Using the best estimate from the FWC plan published in 2019, there should be over ten thousand bears in Florida. To stabilize the bear population, the harvest should be about 1,500 per year.

Next year, if the FWC decides to stabilize the Florida bear population, they should issue at least 20 times the permit numbers issued in 2025, or about 3,000. If the proportion of success is the same as in 2025, about 900 bears would be harvested. This number is still to low to stabilize the Florida bear population, but it would provide more data to confirm success ratios for bear hunters.

Grizzly Bear Problems in British Columbia have been Accellerating

Image of grizzly bear  by Troy Nemitz, used with permission.

Hunting of Ursus Arctos (grizzly bears/brown bears) was banned in British Columbia on December 18, 2017.  At the time opponents of the hunting ban warned there would be increasing bear/human conflicts. From British Columbia Wildlife Federartion executive director Jesse Zeman:

“When the hunt was closed, we predicted that over time human-grizzly conflicts would increase, but we also know that bears that learn bad behaviors teach those same behaviors to their offspring,” said Zeman. “This will keep getting worse until science-based wildlife management is reinstated.”

Over the last ten years, ursus arctos/human conflicts in British Columbia have doubled from about 300-500 per year before the ban to almost a thousand per year after the ban. This is the same pattern seen over the world as large predator populations are over-protected. The populations grow and spread and come into conflict with humans. The predators have not learned to be afraid of humans because hunting is banned or severely limited. The aggressive predators are not selected out of the population by hunters. Prior to the attack on a large group of school children in Bella Coola, problems with ursus arctos (grizzly/brown) bears had been increasing for some time. Here are examples: From CityNews.ca:

“And what had happened is that a grizzly — it looks like a sow and her two almost full-grown cubs — had gone in and found the fridge and dragged the fridge actually halfway out and across the bed and everything else.”

The animals had completely demolished the kitchen.

“I’m talking counters, cupboards, drawers, glasses, plates, and everything else,” she said.

The couple also has a trailer on the same property, and Munro says the damage there was even worse than in the house.

The Munro couple were extremely careful about not having bear attractants on their property. They had complained to B.C. official about previous problems. Now they are leaving the area.  The BCWF also document these conflicts:

  • A neighbour watching his two young children in the house had a grizzly opened a lever-handle door to enter his garage and cause a ruckus; he was forced to shoot the bear at close range in front of his kids.
  • A disabled, elderly man had his cedar siding and plywood wall ripped apart and building contents ransacked by a bear, despite his installation of steel doors—an (ultimately unsuccessful) attempt to prevent the bear from re-entering after it had broken through his regular door.
  • Neighbours had their garage door destroyed by a bear who returned the next night and caused further damage.
  • An elderly woman living alone had a grizzly break into her home, destroy her mudroom, and drag her freezer onto the lawn—all while she was inside.

The is the same pattern seen across the United States, in Europe, and in Japan. Large predators are protected and hunting is outlawed or severely limited. The large predator population expands beyond wild areas and start encroaching on rural populations and even some urban areas. Japan doubled the fatalities by bears in 2025 past the previous record from 6 in 2019 to 13 in 2025. Fatal bear attacks in Europe, especially Romania, have increased with increasing bear populations.  Florida had its first recorded black bear fatal attack. Arkansas recorded two fatal black bear attacks in 2025, the first in over a hundred years. California recorded its first ever fatal black bear attack in 2024. Fatal mountain lion attacks are increasing. Only 9 fatal attacks were recorded before 1970, with 19 recorded from 1971 to 2026. Human wolf conflicts are increasing with the re-introduction of wolf packs into the lower 48 states.

Analysis: These numbers are fairly small compared to human homicides. The dangers are very low unless you spend time in areas with significant predator populations. Nearly all of these attacks can be prevented if humans take the trouble to arm themselves with modern handguns. Only one human who fired a handgun in defense against bears has been killed in over 200 recorded incidents. No human who was armed with a firearm has been recorded as killed by a mountain lion. No armed human has been killed by a wolf pack in a recorded incident. Several incidents have been recorded of armed humans stopping attacks by mountain lions and wolves.  Modern cartridge handguns are exceptionally effective in stopping predatory animal attacks.

The people killed and mauled by predatory animals pay a high price for the animal worship currently pushed by deep-green environmental groups and Neo-pagan nature worshipers. The numbers killed and injured are small and self correcting. As more people are mauled and killed, more people will effectively defend themselves and their property. Those facts will be reported in our disseminated media. The stories are too interesting to dismiss. In the United States, rights protected by the Second Amendment are being restored. As more people arm themselves, more aggressive predators will be killed, and balance will be restored. People who arm themselves in wild areas do much to protect those who use those areas unarmed.  Large predators learn humans are dangerous and learn to avoid them.

Fellow humans in Canada, Europe, and Japan are not so fortunate. Expect more stories of fatal large predator attacks on humans in those areas.

An indictment against Maduro had been issued by a New York grand jury in 2020, accusing the Maduros of conspiracy to transport and sell illegal drugs into the United States.

Because the United States does not recognize the Maduro regime as the legitimate government of Venezuela and because of the indictment against Maduro, his wife and others, this was considered to be a United States law enforcement action where the assistance of the United States military and intelligence agencies was required. It is a tribute to the Trump Administration the operational security of the operation was well executed. The American media did not receive leaks of the operation. Congress was not made aware of the operation until it was well underway. Secretary of State Rubio made clear such communication could not be done because of the nature of the operation and mission. President Trump made clear no American lives were lost during the mission.

Because the Maduros and others were indicted of conspiracy to import tons of illegal drugs in to the United States (over more than 25 years!) United States law allows the conspirators to be charged with illegal possession of machine guns and destructive devices.  From the Maduro Indictment:

Count Two of this Superseding Indictment, knowingly used and carried firearms, and, in furtherance of such crimes, knowingly possessed firearms, and aided and abetted the use, carrying, and possession of firearms, to wit, machineguns that were capable of automatically shooting more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger, as well as destructive devices, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 924(c)(l)(A) and 924(c)(l)(B)(ii).

(Title 18, United States Code, Sections 924(0) and 3238.)

In paragraph 37 of the indictment, the United States declares the defendants "shall forfeit to the United States" all firearms and ammunition used in the commission the offenses. It may seem odd that actors who never entered United States territory and whose action occurred outside United States territory can be found guilty of United States crimes. Such law has precedent from piracy and smuggling laws, where organizations involved in such actions stayed outside of the United States.

The action to bring the Maduros into custody, to stand trial in the United States has precedent from the arrest of Manuel Noriega, dictator in Panama, on January 3, 1990, 36 years ago. This correspondent spent five years in Panama under the Noriega regime. The situation was rather similar. The people of Panama did not consider Manuel Noriega and his confederates to be a legitimate government. The invasion of Panama was executed rapidly with overwhelming force. The lost of life was much greater than appears to be the case in Venezuela, but was small in military terms. Manuel Noriega found Jesus in prison in the USA. He was extradited back to Panama custody in December of 2011, where he had been convicted of murder. He died in prison in 2017. The fate of the Maduros is yet to be written.

The ability of the United States military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies to execute such a strike with overwhelming force, speed and precision stands in stark contrast with the bungle of a similar effort by Russia, almost four years ago. In a decapitation strike against the Ukrainian government of President Volodymyr Zelenski, Russian special forced failed to take control of the government. The Russian special forces which survived the decapitation effort were killed or captured. Russia and Ukraine remain in a bloody, stalemated war.

In Venezuela, it seems unlikely there will be much opposition to a United States supervised transition to a legitimate government. Maduro is widely unpopular. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported much of the security apparatus in Venezuela had been taken over by Cubans. He stated a challenge of transition to a legitimate government will be the removal of Cubans from Venezuelan government and security forces. From the press conference, by Rubio:

One of the biggest problems Venezuelans have is they have to declare independence from Cuba.

President Trump stated U.S. oil companies will rebuild the Venezuelan oil infrastructure. The oil revenue from Venezuela will be used to rebuild Venezuela, to make those harmed by the Venezuelan regime whole, and to benefit the people of Venezuela.

It is to be hoped the right of Venezuelan citizens to possess firearms will be restored in a future government. It seems likely a new Constitution will be written and voted on in Venezuela in the future. The Chavez regime changed the previous Constitution considerably.

What Happened to the Homicide Rate after the Supreme Court Bruen Decision?

Chart produced with tools provided at Real Time Crime Index. Time of Bruen decision added.

On June 23, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) issued a decision in N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen. Prior to the Bruen decision, Courts of Appeal in Progressive dominated Circuits, such as the Ninth and Second circuits, had refused to honor Second Amendment precedent established in the Heller and McDonald decisions. Bruen admonished the lower courts for creating a procedure to treat the Second Amendment as a second class right. Bruen created a simple test to determine if a statute was allowed by the Second Amendment.

The Bruen case clarified that "bear" in the "right to keep and bear arms" protected the right to be armed in public places with arms which can be carried by or on a person. The limitations to this right were stated to be the same limitations as they were understood by the public in 1791 when the Bill of Rights was ratified.  Anti-Second Amendment pundits predicted more violent crime and homicides.

As of the latest numbers from October of 2025, the 12 month running average of violent crime has dropped 14% since June of 2022. The drop in murders is even more pronounced at 39%. The numbers are from the tools provided by the Real Time Crime Index. The index does not track all crime. It tracks a sample using the numbers provided by 570 agencies. The relative proportions of the sample are said to track within 2% of proportions of FBI numbers in the Uniform Crime Reports.  Agreement to within 2% of overall proportions, in this sort of measurement, is quite good. If the Real Time Crime Index shows a rise or fall in crime numbers, it essentially mimics what is happening in the FBI numbers. The 570 reporting agencies cover over half of the crimes reported in the United States.

After the initial wave of anti-Second Amendment propaganda subsided, approval of the Bruen decision returned to about 2/3 of the respondents. The Second Amendment is popular in the United States of America.

The drop in violent crime and in homicides is coincident with implementation of the Bruen decision. It started before President Trump was elected to his second term. It is also coincident to the election of a Republican majority in the House of Representatives, which placed some restraint on the excesses of the Biden administration. 2022 is also coincident with a retreat from some of the anti-police and pro-criminal policies pushed by what became known as "Soros" prosecutors such as Kimberly Gardner in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Cause and effect are not easy to determine. A return to the rule of law clearly works to reduce crime.  The far-left notion of police as the cause, rather then the cure for crime has not held up in real-world situations. It cannot be proven the Bruen decision was instrumental in reducing violent crime and homicides. The fact that violent crime and homicides fell after the Bruen decision make it unlikely restoration of rights protected by the Second Amendment increases violent crime. It is more likely restoration of rights protected by the Second Amendment is a contributor to lower violent crime and homicide rates.
