AK:Hiker Stops Charging Bear with AK

Most AK-74 type rifles are chambered in 5.45X39, a cartridge very similar in ballistics to the .223 or 5.56X45 round most commonly used in AR-15 type rifles.  I have always thought that modern sporting rifles with standard capacity (30) round magazines would be good protection from bears.  Easy to use, accurate, low recoil, are all attributes that make them good defensive choices.

A man hiking on a popular Turnagain Arm trail near the Seward Highway killed a charging brown bear with a semi-automatic AK-74 rifle Sunday, prompting Chugach State Park rangers to close a section of the trail.

“The bear presented its rear end to him,” Crockett said.

The man called, “Hey, bear,” hoping not to startle the animal, he said.

The bear turned and charged, the hiker later told rangers.
