(TX)Reserve officer shot and killed intruder

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Authorities said a 30-year-old Poteet reserve police officer reportedly shot and killed an intruder at his North Side home Tuesday morning.

Police at the scene said Officer Alfredo Isaac Gonzalez was asleep at 3:15 a.m. in the upstairs apartment at the Lincoln Village Apartments in the 1700 block of Jackson-Keller Road when he heard glass shattering in his kitchen.

Gonzalez told police that when he went to investigate, he saw a man trying to break in through a window. San Antonio police spokesman Officer Matthew Porter said Gonzalez identified himself as an officer and ordered the intruder to stop, but the man ignored his commands.

Porter said Gonzalez then fired once through the blinds. The intruder was struck in the head and died on the apartment’s patio, police said. The alleged intruder, believed to be in his early 20s, was wearing black socks on his hands and had tools in his pocket.

Police said the intruder apparently opened a patio storage closet before trying to enter the home. No charges are expected for Gonzalez, who Poteet Police Chief Martin Chavez said had been an unpaid volunteer patrol officer for the department only about a month, working once a week.

Chavez said Gonzalez was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Gonzalez’s peace officer license never has been suspended or revoked because of disciplinary actions, according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Meanwhile, police said two other men were in Gonzalez’s apartment at the time of the shooting. A man who answered the door at the apartment Tuesday afternoon declined an interview request on behalf of the household, including Gonzalez.

Several neighbors at the complex said the incident didn’t make them feel unsafe. Jorge Rodriguez, who lives in Gonzalez’s building, applauded his neighbor for using a gun to protect his home. Rodriguez said he keeps a pistol for self-defense.
