ID: Armed Homeowner Shot by Police in Case of Mistaken Identity

There is body camera video, but it has not yet been released.

An Idaho Falls man was shot and killed by a police officer in his own backyard after being mistaken for a suspect fleeing a traffic stop.

The fatal officer-involved shooting took place in Idaho Falls early Monday morning as police scoured a residential neighborhood in search of a man with a history of violence against law enforcement who was said to be armed.

'There are no words to express how heavy our hearts are today,' said Chief Bryce Johnson. 'This situation is devastatingly tragic for the family, for the officer, and those that love and care about them. We all feel the weight of what has occurred today. Our sincere sympathies are with the family and friends of those involved, and most especially the family of the deceased.'

Very few law enforcement believe they should not be the only armed people in our society and are of the belief they are the only qualified experts to have the ability to handle weapons as they are so highly trained. My opinion That is Bullshit. If they are so highly trained why do they always shoot to kill any one they fear? It makes me believe they should be called the cowards in blue If they are so highly trained why not shoot the weapon out of the hand and make an arrest of the live threat to take to trial? I'm 73 well past retirement age but I trained my self and I could hit/shoot a fifty cent piece at 50 feet fast draw. I could put two bullets in the same hole at 25 meters free style. we have seen reported many times recently stories of law enforcement shooting to kill and they killed the innocent. That kind of law enforcement claims the title of trigger happy cowards. I think back to the California bank robbery when 300 law enforcement were firing at the bank robbers at various distances with numerous kinds of weapons. some were firing at less than 75 feet. They finally had to run them down with a cruiser. Personal experience if you are being fried on with automatic weapons shoot to kill. If you are going to shoot hit the target or don't shoot. there are many places to shoot that are not killing shots and still bring down the aggressor. An old but I believe true saying If you kill a cop do not expect to be taken alive. problem the only perfect person was hanged on a tree so there can be times when killing a cop in self defense is proper. body cams are a great invention. But they cant bring any one back to life if wrongly killed by an expert corrupt cop. The flaw in law enforcement training starts at the police academy. Civilians are not all a deadly threat to the uniform but some of us are far better trained to shoot.
