South Africa: Father Shoots armed Criminal to protect Daughter

South Africa has extremely strict restrictions on the private ownerwship and use of firearms.  It has one of the highest crime rates in the world.

One of two burglars who broke into a home in Welgemoed on Saturday was shot dead by the owner in an attempt to protect his daughter.

Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson of the Bellville police, confirmed the incident that happened around 18:30 in Van Jaarsveld Street.

"There is a lot of speculation on social media that it was the work of a crowbar gang. I cannot confirm that yet," Nimb said.

"What I can confirm is that the owner, his wife and daughter were alone in the home.

"The father heard his daughter screaming and ran down to her room. As he entered, he saw a man in the room with her with a weapon in his hand," Nimb said.

"The father shot through the door. The burglar died in the daughter's room."
Nimb said the police responded soon after.
