He said the two victims, ages 19 and 23, got into a late-model, wide-body Dodge Charger when two people in a blue sedan approached and pulled alongside them.
"They were wearing masks and announced a holdup," Newson said. "One of the victims in the Charger, a CPL holder, produced a weapon and one of the suspects in the blue vehicle (both) opened fire."
Police said a witness to the gunfight produced his a weapon and fired at the blue sedan.
Newson said the suspects fled and were last seen heading south on the freeway's service drive.
