I grew up in a town where you never had to lock your doors, not even your car doors. You could sleep all night in relative safety. but we did have a couple of unwanted visitors. My mother found an old woman going through our laundry basket on the back porch and was confronted with a butcher knife. I was about 8 years old when I woke up to a man standing in my bed room and he was armed with a butcher knife. when he decided that I was not actually awake he left in a hurry. both intruders were in fact black. then we had one person that had an argument with my dad at work and he fired a .22 through the upper part of the front room window, he was white. we had a window peeper one night while were we having dinner. My father calmly got up went into the bed room and got a .22 caliber starting pistol that only shot blanks. He moved calmly to the front room porch door. ripped it open and fired two shots. the man cleared a four foot fence like a gazelle, he was black. He may still be running. It was an old house with the very long windows. My mother noticed a man peeping through the bath room window so my dad set a trap. He bought enough one by fours about 6 feet long and ten pounds of ten penny nails. I helped him sharpen the nails then we installed them below the bath room window and sprinkled dirt over them so you could not see the boards at night. My dad would walk around the out side of the house every night to check his trap. just opposite the window my dad placed a 12 gauge shot gun in plain site of the window. One day dad came in after his check laughing so hard he could barely stand up. His trap had been sprung. lots of bent nails and blood every where. He said it looked like someone had done a war dance on them. window peeping stopped for a very long time. the trap was about 4 feet by 6 feet. and the peeper didn't dare make a sound. at the rate we are seeing home invasions we may run out of invaders.
