Police arrived at the hospital after officials reported that a man had died from gunshot wounds.
During the investigation, police determined the shooting may have been justifiable under Florida's Stand Your Ground laws.
They said it appears to have been an act of self-defense.
A witness told police that Smith was armed with a rifle while approaching a 22-year-old man during an ongoing dispute. That's when the 22-year-old shot Smith, police said.
Police said the shooter has been cooperating with investigators.
