Interim Chief Tyree Jones said the 19-year-old man was shot at the intersection of Lakewood Drive and McDowell Road. Jones said the man is accused of attempting to steal a car from a man's yard, leading to a shootout between the two.
The interim Hinds County coroner identified the victim as Carnell Randolph Jr. Randolph was shot once in the head and once in the upper right arm, according to the coroner.
"It's our understanding that there was an exchange of gunfire between the deceased individual and the person whose truck was being stolen," Jones said. "The victim was transported to Merit Health by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the leg."
