The initial investigation conducted by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit Homicide Squad and the Lodi Police Department revealed that Amr Ali was attempting to forcefully gain access to the front door of the residence utilizing a spear-type object. After a failed attempt, Amr Ali then tried to enter the residence by breaking a window. At that time, the 62-year-old homeowner, who was inside the residence along with two other family members, confronted Ali and ultimately fired three shots at him, striking him once. Further investigation revealed that Amr Ali was a current tenant of the residence and lived in a basement apartment.
